I like the idea of not using the stock top bracket - that's what causes all the vibration on my 850. Makes sense for radiator to be attached to the body not the engine....like every other car ever built('')

my 2 cents, my mate(in a clubbie) has a 10inch slim electric fan, like $40 from supercheap, its about an inch mayby inch and a half thick, his rad is bolted to some plates he made up and rivited to the body, the fan just sits between the rad and the bodywork, it works really really well, the has a swich inside. works sweet. i on the otherhand, chopped the inner guard out and have a fiat uni motor and blade on an alloy panel, with the rad in std position and a alloy shroud, THIS DOES NOTWORK WELL AT ALL. but then i suspect i may have blown a head gasket because imy car starts on 2 cylinders and runs hot
i will be using a 10 inch and bolting rad to body very soon.....dont bodge these things...hehehe

I've always had my radiators mounted to the body with alloy brackets, never to the engine. Four core, no shrouds and four blade metal fan. The radiator is angled forward at the back so it faces more towards the grill. Removal and replacement is a 5 minute job.

Doc outside because its easier to get to or what?

Oh and say the fan I got from you puls from its motor side and towards the fan so to get it to push air through the radiator it would have to be mounted inside the shroud (maybe with the motor section stcicking though a cut in the bars or something.

And making a shroud that wont rattle and vibrate etc just seems like a major pain.

Have you looked at getting a Rover thermo fan? Not sure how they'd go retro fitted - anyway, I took the motor out of this one to give you a look. :)

what? A mini that never overheats? You sure its a mini? :P

So anyway, if you fit a thermo fan to the body side of the radiator you have to set it to pull the air, not push it? Am i right? coz i was thinking of fitting one just in case.

Thought I'd post some pics of my setup - not as clean as the fist pic in the thread, but it is a work in progress...

Yeah that's from previous owner not running coolant and the factory overflow pipe blowing rusty water every where. Nice and full now with green coolant, and functioning overflow bottle. No worries at all. The white powder on my temp sender is from when I installed it the other day - need to do a cable tidy up as you've probably noticed. Will get to car lovers one day and give it a hose down....

Temps are good - 180F around town 200F on hwy @ 120km/h 30 degrees c ambient. Should have gained a couple of hp too not having to drive the mech fan....

So completely removed the 'grill' in the inner guard?

Smac: you'll need to cut it out to gain clearance as the thermo needs to be bolted direct to the rad, as they usually have their own built in shroud. If you bolt the thermo to the grill, it will suck air from between the grill and rad, not thru the rad, and won't work effectively, if at all.

In my experience you will only need it in heavy traffic anyway (ie slow speed running). I live in a rural town 40,000 people and never have it switched on. It's only there for my trips to Sydney while on Parramatta rd....
