 Post subject: Excessive fuel flow

Hi there. I'm a novice with SU carbys so bear with me please.

I have an excessive fuel flow into the motor - so much so that it floods immediately and does not start at all. Plugs are heavily wet with fuel. Where do I start to rectify problem.

Your advice please.

What type of carby do you have? Single or twins?

There will be a mixture adjusting nut located under the carby, around the needle seat. Turning this anti-clockwise will lean the mixture. It must be running very rich if it won't start at all.

Check the needle in the fuel bowl also. I worked on a Mini one time where it was stuck open and it sure soaked the plugs fast. It would actually get a fluid lock the cylinders with the plugs in. Freed up the valve and the thing ran fine after that.

Hi there. It's a single carb 1000cc motor. I checked the needle and seat and it looks fairly new and it seals Ok when checked by blowing air into fuel port. Float is also set within limits.
I turned the needle mixture as suggested (downward) quite a few turns. Did not make any difference.
Plugs are still very wet and there is also fuel on the lower part of the carb and manifold but no sign of a leak other than perhaps being force out of the throttle spindle shaft.

Appears way too much fuel entering motor.
Any other suggestions please.

Okay then, here is what to do. Rip out the engine and put in some type of Japanese motor that is fuel injected that should solve the rest of your problems. That's what I did when my carb started having issues. It sounds like you are not totally new to this so your guess is probably as good as mine without me actually being able to tinker with it myself. Does your float, float? And I think if you turned the adjustment down on the bottom of the carb you are actually making the mixture richer because you are dropping the jet down which effectively makes it bigger. I try going up. On the carb I had on my 1000 there was a small button on the bottom of the carb that you could push up when the car was running. You adjust the mixture until the engine speed does not change up or down when you push this button.

we had this problem, and the jet/choke was sticking open, as the return spring had come off..
check your choke
also, are you using a mechanical or electronic fuel pump?
minis need 3psi
