I used the right technique then, just didn't have the tool.
I found that pushing on the rubber from the inside helped.
Got the back one to fit yet ..
EDIT: I just checked in my manual (inaccessible last night)
expecting it to say
"installation is reversal of removal" or some-such.
The tool used is 18G 468, the instructions are same as JAM's 'sept
it says to lubricate with soap & water, and when cutting the fill strip,
"allow a small overlap and then force the ends into position."
