Can i tell you all a little story about valve bounce???

Ok,,,allright then,,,

once upon a time,,, years ago,,, in my "Byron Bay Surfy" days,,,a mate of mine (Troy Story) had a Holden 138 ex army EJ ute, & we used to fang it from Byron to Lennox head & back,,,well,,,as it happens, this thing would rev up to valve bounce & hang there bouncing ,,,& then with me cringing & gritting my teeth just waiting for it to drop a valve & go "BANG" with the obvious walk home,,,it would rattle like i`ve heard no other rattle,,,REAL BAD & REAL LOUD,,,but then it would just push through & past valve bounce & become quiet as a mouse & rev another 1000rps easilly,,,smooth as a babies bottom it was,,,i honestly couldn`t believe it at first, but then nearly every weekend, he`d do exactly the very same thing.

Harmonics people,,,Harmonics !!!

I`ve allways been one to say that "Too" much valve spring pressure is "NOT" a good thing,,, you know how nearly everyone seems to think that double valve springs actually make an engine instantly quicker???...well they don`t really,,,if you think about it,,, they only make the engine have to work harder to compress them hey?,,,right???,,,all they do is help to resist valve bounce at a higher rev,,,& who`s "Road" engine is reving past 7000rpms ??? (well,,,ok mine, but i still only have single valve springs fitted),,,double heavy valve springs just wears things out & slows your engine down a whole heap...i`m one to simply spring it to about 500rpms more than you`re going to rev it too...but that said,,,very very light springs mixed with very very strong & lightweight valves is a good thing,,,That set up "CAN" make a very fast engine when coupled with all the right goodies & all the harmonics are working together properly.

so,,,when you go to build your next "BIG REV" engine,,,remember the "Byron Bay EJ ute story". :-)

Now get back to work you bludgers,,,stop reading this dribble in work time...read it at home on your own time

:-)

Heh- Matt, it's against my inclination to work Fridays and Mondays any more, so it's on my time..

Guys,
Be aware that if you constantly run at valve bounce point, springs will break from fatigue.. not that we would do that would we...
