I was wondering if anyone with some experience would be able to do a how to on respraying a Mini. It doesnt need to be overly detailed, just maybe what kind of sandpaper to use, in what order to do the coats, when to fix any small dents (ie before or after primer, or inbetween primers? etc..
i would like to do it myself as i cant afford to pay atm.. but really i have no idea
Just a quick run through would be helpful, and yup i already know about the cling wrap part! hehehe
Or if anyone could recommend a good web site or book, that could work too!

Just about every TAFE runs courses with what they call journeyman trades courses. I know that spray painting is a popular course at a number. You could also do panel beating or welding but they do do spray painting.

You take you car there each week (or night what ever the frequency) and a qualified instructor tradesman will teach you and the class as you you prepare and paint your car. The others will also have their cars there too.

One of the Mini Club of NSW women did her mini exactly this way and it looks a treat.

Spray painting is not hard and heaps of people have made great jobs on their first go but it helps to have a mentor of some sort. Hence the TAFE suggestion

Kitty... i was offered an apprenticeship in spray painting and panel beating late last year, i'm going to see the company on friday to see if they are still looking for someone.
Carpentry is ok, but the course is BORING.
So yeah i'd like to actually get into some actual work.


If i land the apprenticeship, i'll be able to teach you how to do it

there are way too many link to give you listing so many conflicting theories and proceedures (thats not even touching on the different paint types and methods and equipment and etc etc you get the idea) so on that point i suggest you do a hell of a lot of reading before you start doing anything

well i would do it like thius:

sand witha bog file, using corse paper, this makes the top paint come off and leaves where the dents are a different colour.

get your self some bog, (ALOT cheaper to buy ina 4 litre tin froma panelshop then super crap etc)

fill in the patches that are the original body colour.

get your bog file out again, start with a corsepaper, then move on to the fine 1 ( the paper comes in pack of 3, 1 super corse, and 2 not so corse)

then when your happy with ur body, get onto it witha 6 inch orbital air sander.

then mask up and paint with 2 pack high fill primer( this fills little scratches)

then give it a web rub and get into any little places that you cant sand witha scotch scourer.

then you give the whole car a going over with prepsol(wax and grease remover) lots of it
then paint it, overlapping each coat, and rememba not to do 1 heavy coat, rather 3 light 1s

then spray your clear coat, if your using 2 pak and a biooth.
then un mask it,

then get some super fine sandpaper, andcarefully rub any runs out, then crack out the buff and away she goes.
