Sounds too lean- what carb has it got? Maybe the needle is wrong now for a 1098..

its a small carb 1 1/4, smaller than the matic (1 1/2)
i think it was using the same needle it came with it

and also the 3rd n 4th sparks were black,
1 n 2 were rather clean

Just to throw in some more suggestions, if the car dies when you release throttle and then starts again, idle is too high, perhaps the dashpot is sticking? Just a thought it is a common SU problem and it's caught me out before. Or the dashpot is taking too long to return, though that would be noticable on gear changes.

Just a thought.
Anto.

well the engine's doing ok now
the friend said that it could go anywhere so im happy about that

2 problems:

1. when you rev it up hard white smoke comes out (but when i drive normally, its ok)
2. speedo at the meter end does not turn

can i get anyone to help fix it on the weekend?
i am told because its not turning up here, ive gotta change the square head down there...

Are you meaning the little Arrow/Arm does not move. If so first thing I would look at would be the speedo cable.

Pull the inner cable out.....If its broken you will only get half which is good becouse you know you'll have to change it and that was the problem
