doc.... not possible with the engine in?

and does it have to be out to identify it?

Yes you CAN do it with the engine in, as long as it's NOT an 1100S or 1275LS block- these have no side covers.. They need to be upside down to get the cam out.

But, Gafmo is pulling the engine shortly to upgrade from a rod change box to a Mini-K remote box, so it's easier to do it while it's out.

Another reason to (preferably) do it with engine out is so you can set the cam timing up properly. You need to put a degree wheel on the crank for this, bloody hard to do accurately in the car, there's no room....
Often you need to fit an an `offset' cam key, to get the cam timed in spot on to the cam grinder's spec.

Full caraf...Love it :!: What is it :?: Want it

I have also rear that you can do it in situe but it also means brilling throught the inner wheel arch, only recomended if you are going to do it on a Reg basses, :x and it's bad enought in the car all the time in tight places EG:speedo cable

No drilling needed- just cut one of the slats in the inner guard and bend it up to get the cam out. If you're picky you can weld it back afterwards, but I didn't bother last time..

BTW if changing the cam to a reground one, you NEED a new set of cam followers. If you fit the old ones it can/will chop the cam out. Newies are cheap anyhow, around $50/set.

<edit>
Cam selection for a 998 is a bit tricky- if you go too big you will lose low-down torque (which a 998 doesn't have heaps of anyway). A 1098 is less picky.
Max I would go for the street in a 998 is around 270* duration, and use stock rockers, not high-lift ones. Reground cams mostly have more lift than stock.
Oz cam grinders (Graham Russell, Camtech, Ivan Tighe) have a good selection.
The old BMC `731' cam isn't a bad road cam in a 998 or 1098 either, but it's a bit low on lift.. 8)

Yes 1.5 rockers do work OK with a 731, and add a few GGs...
But it's cheaper out here to get a reground cam, (like a Russell RE13) with more lift..

Dunno much about Kent 286 scatter cam. Some people in UK reckon it just don't work.
I've driven a 1380 with MD286 and big rockers, and my 1310 with the RE-13 has a wider power band. I can trickle it along at 1800 rpm in 4th gear with a 45DHLA, 36 chokes & 1.5 rockers, and it still will scream out to 8000 in the gears. :P
I've used lots of cams on the street, and this is the best I've tried yet.

Ring Graham Russell at Russell Engineering, on (02) 9630 2195.
He's in North Rocks, Sydney.
If you send him a cam, he can regrind it to RE-13 or whatever, and send it back. 8)
