Hi all

My clutch has started making a squeaking noise when depressed, sounds like there are a flock of sparrows under the bonnet.

I am guessing it is something bad, anybody had anything similar?

Clutch release bearing.
Can be fixed in the car. Use a good UK-made bearing (RHP)- the cheap jap bearings are a POS (3 weeks, I got from the last one I used)

RHP = RansomeHoffmanPollard- UK bearing maker.
Their bearings can be got from any bearing supply house, they also come in the Borg & Beck (and probably Unipart) clutch kits.

If release bearing doesn't have `made in England' on it I won't buy it any more.

fair enuf i spose.... where's the satisfaction in doing that though?? knowing you;ve done the job yourself!

speaking of doing the job yourself.....is it a hard job for a novice (like myself) to do? or does cush have the right idea in sending it to the pros?

Release bearing job is real easy, once you get all the bolts out of the clutch cover. Bottom 2 are tricky. I use a 1/2" ring/OE spanner with the ring end heated and bent to 45*.
Works for me...

how long do they usually last? cos i had a new clutch etc put in about a year and a half ago.....

Would be in the book- just stop `clutch dismantling' once you have the cover off.

How long is a piece of string- it should last for years if you don't ride the clutch at the lights or rest your foot on it...
Maybe you've got one of the cheapo jap bearings in there...!

i was giving it to the pros beacause i'm not enritrely sure what the problem is and it's a case of.. "while you're in there...."


plus, i get the satisfaction of not arsing it up

well i havent been riding the clutch or resting my foot on it.......but my engine mounts are on the way out so i've been VERY gentle on gearchanges for a few months now.....

ahh well, i'm guessing just doing the bearing isnt too expensive either is it?

You heated your spanner?? I bought a $1 Super Cheap spanner, just bent it in a vice They do have a habit of snapping though.

The annoying part is that I have lost my custom spanner for clutch end covers, and I'm up for a bearing replacement again!
