Well after getting the points replaced and car running all ok, now appears that the head gasket is now had it.

looked under the oil cap and what to find is a clump of white goo. not a good sign.

as being out doing a few jobs in the car, required a tow truck and got it down to Ivan at mini spares and luckly for me he was there. we took out the spark plugs to find a little water on the plugs another not too good sign, after taking out all the plugs we gave the car a little start to find a huge spary of water coming out of from the plugs, not happy.

Put an ACL head gasket on, they are the best smallbore ones here now.

Darn that's too bad :(

$20 for an ACL head gasket from repco will set you straight. Fairly easy to do too...

I'm affraid it seems to be one of the mini ownership rights of passage , most people I've known that get their first mini have to do a head gasket in the first few months , my original mini was included in that list . As mentioned above they are fairly easy to do and a good place to start learning about the engines whether you get someone to help you do it , or you can arrange it to watch while it's being done . Stick with it and enjoy the drives afterwards .

problems??
i have got a few too... after fixing the engine properly in [it was loosely put in when I bought it! :( ] and got a new dash board and some nice looking parts, my pink mini finally got to run smoothly on the road.
Now the problem came up that I can not do reverse!! Before I have time to get it fix, I have to park on slope and I can slide back with neutral?.
