I have just about finished installing my new steering rack today. However when l turn the rack from from left to right you can feel the rack running backwards and forwards along the pinion.Could this be because it is new and will eventually come good once the oil has a chance to circulate ? Are new racks normally like this at first

Dunno! they should be ever so tight and notchy I suppose....what you have described sounds like binding of some sort....did you centre the rack before tightening?? Are the column splines sitting right with the pinch bolt correctly fitted?? Tie rods right??

I thnk more investigation is in order.....

The steering column and the tie rod ends have not been attached to the rack at this stage. The rack is attached to the car by the u bolts only.
I just pushed and pulled the drivers side tie rod a couple of times and you can definitely feel the rack moving over the pinion. As this rack is new l assumed that it already has oil inside. Will check tomorrow just in case.
