Problem with my normal belt, is that when you tighten it, it slowly loosens, you no longer have to pull that thingy on the belt to adjust it, it can do it by itself! I figure that would not be good in an accident. Problem with inertia reel belts is they cost twice as much! Maybe I'll just switch front belts so the passenger gets the dud one

Hi, a big hello to me. I've been lurking around this board for a while and finally got around to registering.

Some of you already know me, most of you (looking at the numbers here now probably dont).

regardsing harnesses. I have had them (both four and six point) in the last three minis I have owned. There really is only two places to anchor them, on the rear passenger shelf and to the cross bar of a 6 point roll cage. The secong method is better beacsue the shorter straps stretch less and in a rear or rear side impact the shell of a mini will change shape and that could cause the harness to become loose and the next thing you know you are flying through the windscreen. Having said that not everyone has a roll cage so rear shelf is next best but you must put BIG BATSRD backing plates, do not underestimate the forces involved in a crash - ask DR Mini. The rear you cant attach them at much less than 90 deg from back is because in a big accident the force can actually a) snap the back of your seat and your spin or b) pull so hard down on your shoulder (instead of back) it will do you serious injury.

You need to ask yourself how often you have rear passengers. I use the clip in type harnesses so on the rare occassion I have to have someone in the back I can just unclip the harness and use normal belt. NOTE: 4 point harnesses are illigal UNLESS you get and engineers certificate which is not hard to do.

Im using 3 point harnesses in mine crap tin, the rear mount is bolted to the flat section under the rear seat with a piece of 6mm, 90mm by 90mm plate underneath, the angle and the plate is correct as per the ADR's and has been approved by an engineer. The harness goes through the gap between the upper and lower section of the rear seat. But seriously if you have a decent head on, no matter how good ya belt is, drivin a mini, u gunna die!

I (just) survived this tree head-on without a belt back in `65, I was the front seat passenger...

My son also survived a head-on with a Camry in his Mini, I know of other survivors of Mini head-ons too.
They are (surprisingly) not real bad in head-on accidents, compared to many small cars.

whoa... nasty... mmmmm

anyway.. onto a lighter subject.. (that photo gives me the creeps)

where would i mount a racing harness in a minivan.. (i'm guessing a half/fullcage is the only way)

(edit: after looking at that photo again maybe an ejector seat is a better way to go)

(edit: what i cant work out..is where did the door go)

Dug this up for a thread on the trading post, here it is again.

Any mods out there might like to make this site a sticky reference in the Modification section

<edit> "Upgraded safety equipment
In the case of an engine modification or substitution which falls within the engineering signatory
certified (modified production vehicle) category, the following vehicle safety systems must be upgraded
in order to provide for the increase in vehicle performance. These are the minimum standards required
but where any ADR applies, the ADR takes precedence.
a) Seat belts must be installed for all seating positions. Lap/sash seat belts are required for all front
and rear outboard seating positions. Lap/sash or lap belts shall be fitted to inboard seating
positions"
.....
"Seat belts
The level of safety provided by seat belts must not be reduced. Seat belts must not be replaced by belts
of a lesser standard or with second-hand belts. For example, lap only belts must not be used in place
of retracting lap/sash seat belts. The use of a retractable seat belt disabling device is not acceptable.
Seat belt anchorage points have been carefully chosen and tested by the vehicle manufacturer. Do not
alter the location or strength of seat belt anchorage points without advice from an engineering signatory."

From the RTA horses mouth, gentlemen ( http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... i_dl1.html ) . Feel free to quote this to Mr plod next time he gives you a hard time

Use this information as a guide to what is sensible. My harness is mounted in the rear bulkhead, using 3mmx50x150mm plate to reinforce. These fit in between the ripples in the bulkhead that are stiffeners for the sheet steel. The 3mmx50mmx75mm is the minimum accepted by CAMS by the way.

Michael
