I never use sandpaper to take a shell back to metal.

I use a wirebrush on an angle grinder. It leaves less marks on the surface.

$25 for the wire brush fitting, $20 for angle grinder. A cheapy from Kmart is fine for the grinder. When its breaks, they swap it for a new one.

rotissery guide is kewl... but the shel prep doesnt really mention anything bout sanding paper grades and sugestions...
