I've got the exact same problem.. not even sure of the year.. I've got some investigating to do.. If it is after 71 (I think thats when the plates came in) will this be a major problem? What are my options, any dodgy way of getting round it?
Sorry, not trying to hyjack the thread.

VIN plates came in December 1969.

The car should have a chassis number. This will be stamped on the firewall or radiator shroud panel. You should be able to register the car with the chassis number if you can prove that the car has been previously registered. (You need to know the previous rego number)
Obviously it will be easier if it has the compliance plate.
If it was built before 1969 it will not have a compliance plate. (It will have an ID plate) It does not need an ID plate.

If built IN 1969 it will have neither plate probably, but as said the stamped body numbers should be there.
These days the inspectors (in NSW) seem to believe the radiator shroud number for rego purposes when you go for a blueslip, as that's what Clubbies have on the VIN plate too.

There is no formal register in Oz like the Heritage one in UK.
If you post the body prefix and most of the number here, people can make an educated guess.
Number sequence started at 501 for each body type- eg 850, Mini Deluxe, Mini K.
Original colour (if known) can help pinpoint the year too.
