Hey all, getting to the "fun" part now... gearbox re-assembly...

I've got pretty much all the bits I need, (excellent second-hand selectors, good second gear etc...) but, i have a pile of Baulk rings...
(you know, the bronze-ish-looking ring with 3 sticky-outy bits ...)

So, should be corners of the sticky-outy bits be nice and chamfered to allow easy sliding, or should they be more "Squared" off ...? I have examples off both these as well as many more in between, but just dont know.. whats a good one look like ?

Anyone got a "new" one they can show me a pic of ?

I'm avoiding New ones, as the good doctor tells me (And I quote)

"They New ones are all Crap"

So, If i can re-use an older one that still has lots of life in it, everyone wins ! (especially my minister for Finance....)

Cheers
J

Jim bob , the important thing here is that when pressed up hard against the syncro surface of the gear (the tapered part) as long as there`s something like more than 35-40 thou (ish) gap from the edge of the syncro ring & the side face of the gear, then all should be well

25 tho is just way too little & is a sign that it`s life is nearly over

test each syncro ring onto each gear (mix & match) & just use a feeler gauge to measure them all

make sure when you press them against eachother (the syncros & the gears) that they`re quite flat & not cocked & easy to make sure with the feeler gauge all the way round.

got it???

the 3 sticky outy things on the syncro rings should have a nice sharpish leading edge but it`s not the important part really, more important that you get as much clearance as possible between the synco rings & the gears, that`s what gives you the life factor

have fun man & your 127thou "SMALL BORE" primary gear thrust washer is travelling down to you as i type :-)

James, I didn't exactly mean "the new ones are all crap"- more that they vary a lot depending who makes them, while OK for normal road use they are nowhere near as strong as the good old 3 and 4 synchro ones of yesteryear. These ones had M shaped marks on the periphery....

Hint... it's possible with the good old ones to surface grind .020" off the big (gear) side to get more clearance. A certain racer up in Cairns uses this trick rather than buy new ones....
