What would a full reconditioned 998 gearbox set me back these days?

Give Greig @ Mini Classic a call.
(02)9874 7211

He builds a mean gearbox, and from what I hear, turns them around very quickly too.
Sorry - no idea of price - just call him up and ask. 8)

Depends if you mean to buy outright or to have yours done.

If getting yours done, it depends on the condition. If it is pretty stuffed (and it may still seem fine) it will be many more $$. Like if actual gears need replacing and stuff.

Trust me I am going through this now! In the end I will have a 100% gearbox, diff, remote, and hardy spicers, so that will definately be worth it!

Cheers,

Matt

I just rebuilt a box myself and for all bearings, layshaft, diff pin and gaskets it was a touch over $400.

Then add new synchros, baulk rings, actual gears, and in my case the idler gear, 4th gear thingy (cooper s close ratio), new hardy spicer output shafts and hardy spicer joints, and you can spend 4 times that much on parts.

The cost really is unknown until the box is stripped down and checked, and a lot of people probably even reuse bits that should get thrown out cos they don't know what is worn out. That's why I left it up to a professional... and spent even more $!

But, I will have a damn good box at the end of it (i keep telling myself that!   )

yeah, don`t ever assume that there`s not that much inside the little things, i`ve had customers tell me that they`ve just had the box done up a little while ago & now it`s jumping out of gear or whining badly , crunching etc etc,,,they obviously didn`t spend enough cash &/or with the right person

don`t skimp on boxes

Hmm... there is a place in Blacktown that sells them for around the $600 mark. Fully re-built.
Let me know if you need details and i'll send 'em.

Cheers,
Peter.

Considering the cost of the basic parts is $400, and then add on labour and any of the other bits mentioned earlier, it would be very interesting to see how "fully" these are rebuilt.

I too would be somewhat skeptical of this deal. Interested in who it is though :|

yeah, well...there is a cheap way to just "fix up" a gearbox so it works ok,,,& that is to just rip it apart, fit whatever it "NEEDS" & whack it all back together again, basically maybe a couple of syncro rings, a ley shaft & a couple of bearings & job`s done,,,but that is no way a recond box.

To fully reo a gearbox it takes a whole heap of parts & it`d be well more than $400 in parts

take (for example) a genuine leyshaft (not a cheapo non gen one) at about $100 , then 3 leyshaft bearings (approx $60) , then a double row & a single row mainshaft bearings, (chunks $$$ there like maybe $160),,, then 4 x syncro rings at over $50 each now, ($200),,,then maybe a 2nd gear (probly $100 ---2nd hand if you`re lucky) ,,,then a full gasket & seal kit ($40 ish) ,,,then the diff ($ ??? could take a few hubndred to fix up) ,,,then the outrigger bearing $50-ish & drop gears -idler bearings etc.

So there you have possibly well over $1000 just in bits & pieces,,,not counting labour charges.

some people just don`t realise that the gearbox is just that ,,,a gearbox,,,but we have a differential & a set of 3 drop gears too,,,then you have possible "CASE" problems,,,lets say you have a broken diff housing or a stuffed up primnary case???

Yeah???????

well,,, a $400 box rebuild is just not enough now is it?????????

prices above are just guestimates,,,as i know some people score cheap parts here & there, but you get the picture i hope,,,

now add into that the guy doing the labour,,,how many years has he been building "Mini" gearboxes???????? ask yourselves that now too then????????????

Yeah???????????

well there you go...who wants a cheapo gearbox build job now then????????

I`d rather have the job done right , fit it all in my mini & drive it for another 20 years before it needs another re-build, but that`s just me tho :-) ,,,all that oil from the gearbox taking any ground up metal particles with it right into your oil pump, slicing through your oil filter & straight into your centre main bearing in the crank shaft in the engine,,,yeah!!! Yummy tell your mummy :-)

sorry, but it really gets on my nerve as to how so many people say that it`s a quick easy cheap job , but are happy enough to leave out the important info about all that surrounds these wonderfull little gearboxes. There`s way more to it than just a gearbox.
