Hi
I posted a reply in wanted section but I think its better to discuss it here....

we saw this 1978 Mini clubbie cabriolet and it doesnt have an engineer's certificate, the car is in good condition.
The conversion seems to be done by a professional place. Bracing looks good only 2 small spots of rust bottom door and behind the rear bar its bubbling inside the paint.
its got a bar just behind the front seats middle of the car side to side then from that bar to the center of the windscreen all padded up as well.
its very straight, doors, boot, everythings line up correctly.
Now how much roughly is it to get an engineer certificate or mod plate? if nothing has to be done to it.
asking $5990 is it worth it?

Advice please
thanks

be careful.... you've gotta find an engineer and get it checked over before you buy...

engineers usually don't like checking things once it's painted and done cos paint can hide any number of sins

I know it doesn't answer your actual question of how much if everything is good... check this thread: http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=19537

Hi me again...
I had a 2nd look at this car today and it's a 1976 Mini Clubman S
Manual, Front disc, Twin SUs not sure what engine in it as I'm very new to minis.
When you start it it blows smoke bluish smoke, also on take off on 1st gear.
no smoke on 60-70kph. Maybe worn valve guides or seats?
Engine sound great
Speedo doesnt work, probably needs a new cable? or new instrument
Ignition switch if funny you have to push the wiring/loom behing the ignition barrell up toward you to be able to start it, otherwise it wont start.
The car yard guy was telling it was made like that, I was thinking to myself this is dodgy...it cant be like that from the factory right? needs fixing, probably broken loom or ignition assembly.
Then its got fuel leaking like a motherf*&cker between the SU's (broken hose?)
also leaking coolant (told me it needs a new radiator cap)

Regarding the reinforcement/bracing its got like an inch or inch and half square bracing under the car, both side from the front to the rear. Also crossed bracing front left to rear right and front right to rear left. Padded Roll bar right after the front seats across and on the middle going to the windscreen. Padded Bar behind the top and sides of the windscreen.

According to the owner of the car yard it was converted from Sydney but he's not sure which company, he'll give me the previous owner's number on monday.

Also the wheels are like 20mm out of the flares and the tyres have 165 / 60 i think / 10 Rim. Is this an aftermaket wheels? what size is the orginal ones?

Can anyone comment if this car is worth the risk? I really like it but worried about the issues.

Well , to me it sounds like you could well be buying somebody elses problems that they couldn't fix . Have a google for mini-miami , I think they were done by mini and moke world or G and B mini and moke world or similar (someone else here can give more details) in Sydney and were similar to how that sounds . I've heard mixed reports on their conversions but if it is theirs then they should be able to help with info etc about them being engineered for NSW rego . If it isn't one of theirs and was a one off conversion then you're on your own ....

the conversion looks professionally done the welds are good doors align properly nothing looks out of place.
I'll ring an engineer to organise to have a look at the car to make sure 1st b4 I buy it.
How much is it to replace the worn valve seats/guide? or do I need to rebuild the head?

When I got my rims and tyres from Mini and Moke World, they had Mini Miami looked very neat with all leather trim not standard I presumed jsut by looking at the price tag of $17000 odd. But then again I relaly don't know the average price for one. At the time i know didely sqat generally about mini's.

As suggested above google them or search ebay and such like. Peruse this forum and you'll soon get the general idea, some facts and plenty of helpful hints and tips. Good luck with finding what you need.

that thing about pushing the wiring loom right below the ignition barrel what could be the problem? or is it supposed to do that? I really doubt that though...

RE: ignition switch / barrel. It sounds like it needs replacing. Probably just a wire coming off the back that needs soldering again.

You can buy a second hand ignition switch for under $20 - problem solved.

Minis are FUN. Convertibles are even more fun!!... but I reckon Mini convertibles look daggy with soft tops up.

5K is probably OK for that. Speedo cable, ignition, a couple of bubbles of rust.....all standard on Minis and nothing to worry about.
