You are ripping the old paint off to bare metal AND.....
if you are going to use a primer putty AND.......
you are not doing to do the whole job in a weekend. In other words you are going to give the primer time to dry completely and 'settle'
Otherwise you will see the sander marks through the gloss.
It is a bit of a false acconomy as it will be quicker to get the old paint off but it will take you longer to block the scratch marks out of the primer for that perfect finnish
