hey guys i have to do my interior soon... like pretty much everything? any inputs? ideas? wheres the best place to go? or should i just get a carpet kit and do it myself? if so anyone know where i can get spec's for door cards and so forth?

It's all about how much dosh you have. If you want to spend $5000 then get leather interior done professionally. If you've got $500 then I suggest you buy a carpet kit and DIY. Anyway DIY will always be better than hiring someone to do it because you can do it the way YOU want it. If you've got substantially less than $500 well then you have to get inventive! (ie. cut the carpet yourself)

With door cards, either use your old doorcard as a template or create a template using poster cardboard before cutting it out of MDF or whatever you plan to use. It's not rocket science, just a matter of trial and error. Even if someone gave you a template for it, 99% sure that it won't fit perfectly. Trust me, my right door card is 5mm longer than my left door!

yea I have this dilema coming up soon too!!

I was torn between retrimming in standard poo brown, or plush new velour.

Personally, I think you should speak to a few trimmers. Get ideas and prices from them. It's a really specialised trade, and most home mechanics wouldn't trim themselves.

Match the trim colour to your exterior colour. For mine, being darkish red, I am going with a light beige or tan colour trim. I think that will work well. Go to new car yards and look at trim in new cars. Get some ideas for fabric, then tell your trimmer you like 'whatever' from 'whetever' car.
I did that with my paint choice.

bad news anton, if u want a fabric thats in current cars you will wait 5 years for it unless u know someone on the inside. dealers never release the material to the public for atleast 5 years as they market their own retrim and repair parts. if they sold fabric it would under mine their own market.
also i have worked at a trimmers before and id personally recomend a darker colour for a car thats used regularly. i have seen some filthy cars around the shop. if u want velour gwt a charcol pitted velour with a grey highlight in it looks very nice in restored cars

Grey / black / charcoal trim is soooooo old hat and boring (IMHO).

I was something classy and unique. I hear you about light colours, but JAM is a weekender for me.

Hey JAM, what about a red and tan interior? ie red carpet, tan dash, tan seats with some red stitching and tan door cards with some red patterns?

to add to that i dont just work for them, im the motor trimmer apprentice, 'the trim guy' i can get carpets and trim for free (we do the carpets for holdens and mitsubishi magna's)
AND over in our melbourne plant we do seats for ford falcons and territory's.

im getting a 3x2ish piece of carpet for myself tomorrow or so.
and i can get whatever trim i want scrapped off.

MUst admit I was thinking about this today As I striped the last of the engine bay and the peddals steering wheel and all the so called carpet except the Seats that are Welded in ...I'm lucky only surface rust..Anyway have a flick throught some of the Mini Mags (new Ozzy one out 10 Dec) and get some idea's from thier. depending on how complicated it is you may be able to most of it yourself or get Mum/Girlfriened do help with the stiching , We don't wont to see blood over the keyboard, now do we

i have just completed the interior for
the sunshine, it turned out great, i used
all original material (vinyl and dot pattern
cloth inserts.) it looks really good, and i think
going for a kind of original look would
look good,

as for door cards - get them done professionally
i got mine done that was and they also turned
out really well - anton has seen them and cn vouch
for that (i think unless he was lying when he told
me he liked them ) they weld all the vinyl to the door
card and can put all the old lines in (polyweld in peakhurst
is excellent and did mine inserting chrome and cloth
as per original)

Me is lazy.

Got quoted 420 bucks for new carpet front and rear with the best underlay they could recommend, new webbing mats under both seats, and redoing the vinyl cards in the door pockets(the door cards are fine). ALL FITTED. Shop around, and find what YOU want, then figger out what fits your budget.


It was on the drive home I realised I never asked about the hoodlining, which is white and covered in that rust lookin crap.

I work for an engineering company that makes a lot of the seat production lines for Air International in melb. We've got a few territory and commodore seats floating around, although they'll need re-trimming. I'l probably try and get hold of them, for when I get a mini, if they'll fit in. Mmm, 6 way seats.


850pvan- can you get us new car carpet? Might be a good way to fund that next mod...

Great ideas there. I love red carpet. I see it a lot in UK Mini's.
