Have you emptied the fuel tank and re-filled?

Mine did this but has stopped (actually I havnt driven it enough)... but mine was battery/electrical related I think... but as poeee says it could be. My mate adjusted my tappets about the time it stopped) ah... how NOT noisy she is now.

Do you have the standard lucas fuse box?
I have to replace mine because I had intermittent problems there.

I found mine spluttered and coughed when the battery was completely dead. I was actually running out of spark (need more power - scotty)

Also, does it happen in every gear or only 4th, doe sit happen only in high revs or any range. If you floor it does it happen or if you slooowly cruise up to a high rev range does it happen?

Can you make it happen by hand (I mean, pop the hood, and use your hand to rev it)?

Peter.

hmnm... so its really only under load.

I've heard that people get this if the fuel cant get there... ie/ starving for fuel.
Hows the fuel pump lookin?

How can someone check that its getting enough fuel?

Doooooc where are yoooouuu??

Peter.

Definitely could be a head gasket.
Are you needing to keep topping the water up?
Is your radiator pressurising?
Check the caps - oil and water.

How about fuel filter being partially blocked ? New needle and seat in float bowl of carb perhaps , incorrect float level in float bowl (not keeping enough fuel in carb for under load conditions ??) , loose wire from ign to starter solenoid ? CLutching at straws here I'm afraid .

How about the fuel tank itself , did you have it out when rebuilding the car , has it sat for any length of time outside the car without a cap (possible rust debris inside fouling fuel outlet ) , how about fuel lines , any looked squashed or perished ? Just as an idea do you have access to anything like a surge tank (litre tank with a line in and out , fuel pump fills it up and it keeps a ready supply of fuel near the carb under load rather than having to be drawn from the tank . Had to make one for a mates RX2 hill-climb car as when it launched the fuel pump had trouble keeping up with the motor ) so you can see if it's a fuel flow problem under load ?

To me it sounds like something electrical, I recently has similar symptoms, which resulted in the car breaking down in the hills, the points turned out to be the culprit.

I'd recheck the points gap and timing.

Have you tried replacing the items you replaced with the old ones again and see if it fixes the problem? If you have only had this problem since then, it would suggest there is a fault with something you replaced.

ok so it revs freely when there is no load on the motor ....... not fuel
i have had this exact prob simple soloution clean all the contacts on the fuse box clean all connections to the dissy and coil ......
what it is underload there is not enuff spark to keep it all happerning what makes spark coil distributor ..... how dose it get the spark voltage and ampage what happens when the terminals are all dirty .....
resistance .....
what happens when there is to much resistance ........
current will not flow .....
no flow of current no spark ......
try this very easy fix you may well be surprised ....
when you get a chance go to super crap and get some of there 5 fuse blocks the replacement has two of them
also just have a look at the gap on the points them shitty plastic buffers on the points melt and throw out ya timeing to buggery there should be a slight smear of grease on the bumpy bit
