Gday everyone!

Ive recently had my 998 rebuilt up into an 1100.
Heres a couple specs,

ENGINE:
40 thou over bore
1100 crank
balanced
lightened fly
compression up to about 9.5, maybe more
sports cam, one up from a cooper S standard..( is a daily driver)
LCB extractors
1.75 inch exaust, RC 40 exit

HEAD:
Ported and polished
chamber shapes changed
bigger exaust valves.

Runs great..pretty fast...but im only using a 1.5 SU
my mini mechanic has offered a 45mm webber to me for $450...is on a swan neck manifold, and will be cleaned up to fit..

my QUESTION: Will it still be possible to choke it down enough to run nicely on my 1100.
i do know its more common to use a 40mm..just that i think this is a decent price for this 45.

any help please....thanks

K-Bar

Unless that price includes proper jetting and tuning for your engine I don't reckon it's a good price at all.. You'll have to put a weber box in aswell with the swan neck type manifold I believe? Otherwise you want to switch to a redline manifold which will cost you another $200

To answer your question yeh it's possible, chong (68deluxe) is running a 45 dellorto on this 1100cc engine.

Chong is running a 45mm OK on his engine, but i think a 40 would be better..

The swan neck is one of those crappy bent manifold alex, no need for a box and more room than the 3005 redline...

As alex said, if it includes the right chokes, jets and tuning, then it's OK ....

Oh hold up nah you won't need the box with the swan neck manifold will you.. but these are apparently inefficient compared to other manifolds..

To be honest I would stay with the reliable 1.5" su.. if it's working keep it!

EDIT: ah you beat me to it josh :)

yes price includes getting it set up..

ive looked around here and people dont sell webbers for that much.

the 1.5 is working, but i think it has issues..ive tuned it..done the spring and needle..but its using too much dashpot oil...and my mini is doing 9.4 litres per 100 Ks....thats not too good.

i thought a webber would be worth the shot

I have a similar amount of work done to yours (very similar spec actually) cept i'm running a 40mm dellorto and i get 9.8L/100km ...so i would expect that...this is a 40yo engine and you have added alot more power to it by modifying it, more power requires more fuel.

And i hate to tell you, but it ain't going to get any better with a webber!

i KNOW that its an older engine..i KNOW that its hotted and will use more fuel...

im saying that im using a ONE POINT FIVE INCH SU..

i COULD have more fun on the same fuel...it flutters between 9.4 to 9.8 usage per 100kms... i COULD just use a webber

i would fit twin hs2's or a single hif44, i reckon the weber is overkill, and i think you'll dump a lot of petrol down the exhaust pipe

Well overall:

It IS possible to get the 45 jetted for your engine. If the $450 includes manifold, linkages, and completely set up for your engine then I'd say it's probably worth it. But just remember if theres bits missing it all adds up:

linkage kit ~$90
air filter assembly ~$60
soft mount kit ~$40 - $50
jets can cost a fortune aswell!

Jets and emulsion tubes for a 45 Dellorto cost around $100, Weber prices would be similar.
Chokes are extra if the ones in it are too big.
