Not to sure if it was on this forum or another..

But Im sure it was on here..

I read someone spent like $30k on restoring a Mini only to find out it was stolen then they had to give it back to the rightful owner..

The recording of the VIN number has always been the case.

Who did you buy the car from?
Do you have a receipt?
Did it come with any rego papers or an old rego label?

I bought my first S/H Mini in 1964, yes NSW have always listed the body (later the VIN) number.
These days the VIN number seems to be more important to them for ID than the engine number- but this was not always the case.

So just give them the four didget body number, not the YKA2s2 blablabla in front.

Thanks, Why would the number be removed from the national data?

The reason that there is no national data is that untill 1987 there were no rules pertaining to the style of or type of vin numbers and states only kept there own records, after 87 vin numbers must be of 17 digits world wide and must contain a certain number of alpha and numeric digits, this was done to try and stop rebirthing of foreign vehicles as well as local cars

National data is so recent, it's not all up yet, or they have a cutoff date and ignored previous.

couldnt you just put a radiator cowl and vin plate off a wreck at the wreckers?
my vin plate and vin on the cowl dont match. I had to get a letter from vicroads Head office to OK it.

You could go to a wreckers, write down the number pay for a vin search and then whack them in your mini. or maybe I am simplising this a bit to much

DAVID

This my freind is what is called rebirthing.... this is not legal.... and certainly shouldn't be suggested on a Forum such as this........

careful with that, when I went to get mine registered the tester didn't realise there was Yetc.etc. stuff infront and just took the number part down. Turns out 2 trailers in NSW and 3 in melbourne are registered with that number already lol.
