Besides village rumour, does anyone here know the facts on what a Mini engine will handle regards ethanol additives now being proposed by the government. Would I need a compensating additive for an EFI Rover? Information here seems very contradictary.

A little off topic but I use a Fuel Star on my car, and use bio-unleaded stuff, the fuel start increases the crap octane level of 95 to about 97-98 making it barable to a 1275 mini. AS for EFi...i'm not sure. But I've heard minis are dodgy on the bio-crap but the fuel star apparantly contains a catalyst that helps the burn of the dodgy chemicals, and my car works fine but i cant tell what is truth and what is rumour. Call Steve O'Malley at Brickworx in Adeladie as he imports rovers and injection etc, he may be able to help.

10 percent ethanol should be fine for most things, so I dont imagine it would a problem for A-series, the actoane rating isnt impacted by ethanol, in fact ethanol has lots of octanesses. However the specific energy is lower for ethanol so you tend eat more of it.

The main problem is pump seals and hoses which get eaten by the stuff. Rubber is not so bad, nylon and plastic gets brittle and can fail

I would start by replacing ALL the fuel hoses from tank to carbs with US-made stuff (Gates or Dayco).
And if they are SU carbs, rekit them, including the main jets.

<edit> the same applies for an injected car, re the hoses..... :wink:

The owners handbook for my 84 Austin Montego says the following about fuel...

I do not know why they don't recommend ethanol but they don't recommend it. :wink:
The Montego has a 1275A+ engine with a HIF44 carby and a mechanical fuel pump.

Have they said yet when they will stop subsidising it by not charging fuel excise on ethanol blends ? They are a smidgen cheaper at present because they have about 30 cents per litre less excise ...... (do a google search , I thought it was a joke till I checked it myself ....)

The other mob are claiming its their idea, and that they are leading the ethanol push!

No, they don't drive minis. The leader of the opposition drives a Territory to prove his green credentials :roll: . I'm serious, and he even wheeled it out for the cameras to prove he's ready for ethanol (it can take E10) - too bad the truck guzzles fuel at 3 times the rate of my mini around town. :twisted:

i dont think it poses a problem unless you are running over about 8psi of boost

Thanks for interesting comments. This is first mention I hear of modifying the fuel line to avoid corrosion (I don't remember that point within the goverment promotion). If 'm reading right Kev's link suggests a few problems.
1. Larger injectors or carby jets would be needed. Are these available?
2. Greater evaporation qualities. So who has a fuel cap that seals perfectly?
3. Alternative fuel pump needed? More likely to spark, oh no!! As if Lucas electrics ain't interesting enough!

Anyone hear of Mini's in Brazil (where this fuel mix seems popular) running on this stuff (sucessfully)?
