Well , we're back from our little trip to the South Island of New Zealand , a week in Wanaka with visits to the snow at Cardrona and also Treble cone followed by a week driving around the Island roughly in a clockwise direction before flying out again from Queenstown yesterday . This is some of the mini's we came accross , some good ones on the street in Christchurch and Nelson but virtually none on the west coast .

This one was on the street in Arrowtown , a goldmining town near Queenstown and didn't look too bad for a daily driver , the stripes say MINI LE .
Image

We had a look at the transport museum in Wanaka , pretty impressive , 80% of it is one guy's collection and according to the bloke on the door he buy's another car each week or so . Most were either restored or in near excellent condition and ranging from 1910 or so to almost current . 450 cars or so , 20-30 planes and several thousand toys amongst other things with another 150 cars to come from his home yet ..... He only had 2 mini's ,

From there we didn't see another mini till Nelson in the North East but no more photo's till Christchurch , happened on the workshop "Denis Moore , The Auto Electrician" and in the smaller signwriting "minisport NZ" . Denis was busy arguing with the fuel system on a v12 daimler so didn't get much of a chance to chat , his mini's were elsewhere unfortunately but he has a pickup , a cooper S he runs in some events and other mini's . These are a couple of photo's on his wall but I didn't get any details unfortunately , check out the early aerodynamics , and the later shot .....

The Town of Oamaru was a major find though , was looking in an antique shop and commented on a "mini parking only" sign marked not for sale and got talking about mini's to the owner . He then took me out the back to see his two mini's and his "special" . Roger is the owner (Told Roger about ausmini , are you here yet Roger ?) , the GT is an Aussie assembled GT that he uses for hillclimbs etc and was quite neat though in something of a "racing trim" .
Image

The special was originally built and raced by his brother and while not a mini it's worth posting here as a lot of the suspension and brakes are mini and it's hand beaten aluminium body was brilliant . To get the idea of it's size , it's sitting on 10" mini wheels ..... Roger is rebuilding it after finding it in very a sad state , basically the back half missing and it's powered I think by an Anglia motor and Renault gearbox (help me here Roger ???) .
Image
Roger is also working on a Cooper , the body had to be seen to be believed .
Image

Nearby there is a tourist type shop (Oamaru wool shed from memory) which also houses the Oamaru AUto Collection , basically a few people have gotten together and stored their cars together and people can see them , amongst other things was a Ford GT40 , a WW2 jeep , a Tractor and Caravan that's driven around the world , a real assortment but well worth the NZ$6 to see . They have a mini halfway into the shop , a roundnose in rally trim with cage , lights and dash looking very similar to the works item .
Image

Inside was this semi race Austin Cooper S
Image
Complete with what a lot of people would kill for over here to finish off their restoration , two almost brand new 60's dunlop racing tyres .
Image

The collection had a Riley Elf as well that was owned by "an old guy that has several of them and regularly brings his grandkids in to polish it" .
Image

Lastly while getting back into the center of Dunedin I took a short cut and found this poor thing languishing in a back street , a 5 door Austin Metro just pleading for someone to save it .

You'll laugh but I wouldn't mind a nice , orriginal metro , just to prove to people how good mini's are/were . BLMC upgraded the mini into a "normal" looking hatchback with all the "normal" features to be a replacement for the mini and the mini was in production still long afterwards ....

Looks like you had a great time. I was amazed at the number of old cars runnign around NZ. Its like Oz 20 years ago in more than one way.

Of course the ultimate would be a Metro 6R4 but with only a limited budget a standard A+ metro would be the limit .....

Not only the old cars but the wierd cars and variants , followed a VL Commodore up the winding , sludgy gravel track to Cardrona ski-fields , I dropped back to avoid the expected shower of gravel from the back wheels on the bends and there wasn't any . Then I noticed the bulge off to one side under the front of the front diff (Yes , full time all wheel drive bombadore , looked well done/standard too whatever they raided the bits off) . Not to mention the occasional Skoda and Matra and other wierd things we virtually missed here . But of course , the lowrider kingswood took the cake , or at least I thought it was a lowrider as I caught up to it , then I realised there were a few too many heads in it . 4 across the front seat and 6 in the back - all adults , it was down to the bump stops .

I guess I could live with a turbo , there wouldn't be many originals of them left though would there ? They've all been raided for their bits for mini's .....

As far as I know there's only one 6R4 in OZ , any more than the one you mentioned over there ? They must be getting very scarce by now .....

I have had a few metros in my time and must admit they went backwards with that car. it goes fastewr in 3rd than it does in 4th, it wallows as it goes around corners and over steer was natural on these cars, man are they scary over 100kph on a corner. but as a whole i missed my metro when some punk stole it and smashed the crap out of it, when he went to court he just said it was the best car out of 14 he had stole that night.

nice to see the minis stayed in the south island and didnt leave the fare shores but hey there are planty minis about and if you would have contacted anyone before you came over there are a number of clubs around the south island that im sure would have been happy to show you around and maybe take you on a mini run or 2.
glad to see the station wagon in wanaka still has bnot had the tire pumped up since last year.

Yeah , didn't want to turn it into an entirely mini trip but had a post in general discussion looking for tips , mainly a quick trip to have a quick look around , as much as you can in 14 days anyway .

thats like saying im gonna hitchike around oz in 14 days and hope to see a lot.
I mean you did well.
the south island has great roads on it and no one else seems to use them.

we did that entire trip last year form picton to christchurch. duneden (wolrds steepest street), alexandra, wanaka, queenstown, hast pass, fox glacier, greymouth, nelson, picton in 4 days not including the 3 days in christchurch. man was i knackered dirinvg the mini around in such a short period of time over such long distances.

Well , we did 3500 klm's in the 14 days , not a real lot but spent a lot of time driving , some slow roads in amongst it . Not to mention the ski-field roads ..... We viewed this as something of a "taster" for New Zealand , we'll definitely be back but preferrably when the little dude's a bit older so he can understand what's going on and why he's being strapped into the car for 4 or more hours each day .... He didn't do too badly really but a couple of longish days and he was getting bored with it all .

Hi Ian,
You've been in my area and you should have called me to say hi! I am not sure about the Almond green S in the car museum in Oamaru. If it is an S, it has been rebodied with a regular Mini body I think. As you said, the little Elf is as good as anyone could find and there are some pretty nice exhibitson display. Anyway, glad you had a nice time and hope the weather was not too cold. It has improved vastly over the last two weeks here in Christchurch.

Best regards
Al
