About this 850 in Goulburn...
Around 12 months ago I was in the Shell servo in Goulburn in my Morris 1100 and I got talking to a bloke about the Morris and minis and things and he said that there was an 850 in his backyard but it belonged to his next door neighbour and the neighbour would want too much for it. He said that the local kids were starting to trash the car and they had broken a couple of windows.
A couple of weeks ago I went for a walk and I had a look at the car, I was thinking it would be a heap but it was in very good condition except for a couple of side windows broken and the base of the back seat missing. The rest of the car looks good, I think the paint may polish up as well! It still has the magic wand gearstick so I would assume it has the 850 engine.

I have not spoken to the owner so I have no idea how much he wants for it or if he even wants to sell.

It is no good for me as my wife will not let me get it anyway! (too many cars!)
If someone wants to restore an 850 I will pass on the address.
If someone wants a round nose to stick a 1275 and big wheels they can find another car! This one is too original to screw up.

Mick, Morris 1100 master cylinders are the same .... as the Cooper S. The brake master cylinder is larger because the disc brakes need more fluid. The clutch cylinder is the same.

Replace the brake hoses! Replace the clutch hose! Check the clamp bolt on the bottom of the column.

Do you need any bits? (like the master cylinders you gave me)

Hmmmm, thanks Mike...so now I have to find out whether the "big" master cylinder will blow the puny 850 wheel cylinders!! Its no big deal, just that I have a brake and clutch master cyl set from an 1100 and the 850 ain't!!

There is a lot to be done....photos on way....

I do not intend to cut corners in the important parts like brake lines and hydraulic hoses (it just ain't worth it). Thanks for the good advice and hope a few others on Ausmini are listening!!

As for the steering column, splines and pinch bolt - read about the Doc's big shunt and what I added and the fred on Steering Columns to see how paranoid I am at this under-engineered Mini part!

BTW did you get the Qs at Bathurst photos I emailed to you?

BBTW as you know, I ain't afraid to travel to Goulburn either!!! (G'Day Matt...fixed the 'coon?)

Earlier in the year I went and checked out an 850 shell (have the details somewheres)....about three streets up from the main...and maybe a klickometer in from the lights past the Jail.

Thanks for the offer for bits..at the moment it is clean up and assessment time!! Door hinges may be beyond repair? the drivers has dropped so far you have to lift it to mate up with the latch....might be looking for a new top hinge set!! ....then new pins

Cheers, Mick

Hi Mick,
Congrats on the new car! Sorry I missed tuesday.
There is or was a complete but very rusty 850 in a wreckers at the botom on Baylden Rd in Queanbeyan around $100 was the quoted price when last enquired. Some parts you may need?
Paul.

Mick, When I said the 1100 cylinder was bigger I meant that the tin tank holds more fluid and was not refering to the cylinder bore. So it will fit! It just looks wrong if you are picky!

PS. I got the Q pictures. Every thing he said was about right except I am not sure about the straight cut timing gear (was not legal when I was running) and if he spends $900 on brake pads he has way too much money! My last set were free!

Tomorrow I have to drop #2 daughter off at Duntroon then do a loop over to Stirling (Rob W) to help/advise/sympthise on his brand new spaghetti loom (electrics! ya gotta love em)

Thanks to Chris, who helped me wrestle the 333lbs lump of precison British engineering on and off trailers - I now have an early 998 engine sitting on the garage floor. I have been told it may be suffering from low blood pressure so all the hints about, oil pumps, filters, relief valves etc I have read on Ausmini will come in handy.....

Also called into Minstar's (when I eventually found it!) and saw the terrific progress being made.....

Here is the promised piccy of the new beast.....
