You need to decide if you're going for a "works replica" and if so, which country (English or Aussie), or if you want something to just look period.

The above suggestion is great (particularly with the white roof) but I think was mainly used on the smaller capacity cars rather than the Cooper S's, but I also like Surf Blue, Baltic Blue and speedwell blue.

Maybe check out some of the historic rally coverage in the pommy classic car and mini mags for some inspiration.

I don't want it to look like a works replica - I just want it to look like a period race car. The works cars are a bit plain in the colour department.

I agree with marcello , go for the early very 60's cooper and 850 colours , especially saxon green in some combination with another colour .

But which Castrol Green Kev, there have a few different shades over the years, just been through this exercise with a Brisbane car rebuilt as a replica of 1966 winner. Matt McGrath's mini (seen in TME) is Castrol Green but is quite light shade compared to the older colours.

I like Matt's car - could take that road. I believe the green they used was not really the correct period green but it still looked very good.

The Vermillan Red (orange) would be something very different - anyone got any good looking pictures?

I definitely want some stripes on it - not sure what colour we'd stripe on the orange.

Hanra - you know I love your car!!

The red is still an option, but I think I wouldn't mind something just a little bit different.

So far I am liking either the vermillion red or the castrol green colours similar to Matt McGrath's car.

Yeah that car is nice but it IS too light. I painted my 850 (1275) in the original one back in 1967.
I reckon these days find an old original Castrol oil tin from the 60s that's been in a museum or something, then get the colour scanned.
I find it amazing that Dulux etc don't have the proper paint code, Castrol painted their trucks in the proper colour well into the 70s.

Yellow. Real in your face yellow, like Devil Yellow. Doesn't have to be the holden coloura sseen on monaro's as devil yellow has been used as a name for that style of yellow by many companies. Personally, Red, white stripes ans union jack roof is good. But that's my car...Reason for yellow is so many clubby's have yellow (including my dad's) but very few roundnoses do. It's not a very 60s colour but it suits the whole '60s mini done up by teenager in the 70s' look which is rather cool.

Have you ever looked at the fleet section in the Dulux book? It could take a month to find Castrol Green. I have found Repco Green, Geelong Cab Green, B.P. Green, Budget Green, etc.

The guy who was fixing our hot water system two weeks ago is having his clubman painted in that ford metallic blue. It's a real nice colour popular one too. Small world, the bloke, in his 20s gets out of his van and looks at my mini, and goes, "oh so you like minis?' after he fixed of water heater we soke for ages about minis.
