Not many, apparently........

yes, I see the irony in me selling you an A series motor and trying to bag you about not wanting many HP (or KW).

hmmmm well why the Hp you say....

Well its a question i ask myself everyday since i built Bigbad... & well there are easy answers & hard ones...

Hp is actractive... on a dyno or a drag strip...

Best thing about computers & turbo's is you can easily choose how much HP you use on the street... & then turn it up for the track...

Honestly I think for the street a small 100hp that you can drive flat stick every day any day is more fun... But then if you want a scare... Big turbo & hp is the way to go...

But there aint anywhere to go do it except the track... I aint willing to be a f*** wit n show off anymore just to either beat a silly P plater or tosser in a hot Lancer... I think power makes you drive slower in my case...

My speculation
a) Bigger doodle ? (or tighter fanny?)
b) fun
c) to go fast
d) expensive thrills (as oppose to cheap thrills)
e) because they can ...

I don't think HP is just about wank factor. It just makes the vehicle nicer to drive. I do love hammering gears through the twisties. But it's nice when you don't have to downshift on hills. I drive through the mountians from time to time and spending hours driving up in 2nd gear on the shoulder while everybody else wails by isn't my favourite thing to do. Now I just leave it in fifth and the turbo spools up when the car is under load and I just pull up through the moutains, it's a real treat. Now I can rip by other cars on the way up hills as well as the way down. I also got the added benefit of fuel injection, increased fuel economy, decreased weight, and a 5 speed gearbox.
I'm sure Sir Alec Issigonis would have chosen a more powerful and technological engine when he designed the car if they were available. So I don't feel to bad about the upgrades to my car. Also I stayed true to keeping with no stereo in the car so far. And I only upgraded the seats for safety reasons.

When you are building a motor, you need to guage it in some way.
That is HP (in almost all cases)

You have a goal, you want to measure against that somehow.
The obsession for HP for some people IS purely wank factor, for others its pride in knowing what they can achieve with thier motor/build, etc

Some people love cars for other reasons, collectors, etc and couldnt give a rats about HP... it doesnt even have to go anywhere in some cases...

I prefer the HP route...

Peter.

I think this battle could go on forever, with each person having a point of view.

My POV, as Dean said, you can have just as much fun in a mini with 50hp atw through corners. They are a fun car as standard. Give it a bit more hp, gives you the straight line go aswell. When my cars actually working I drive around 10 minutes to the train station each day. Everytime I get out I have a smile on my face because I have had fun getting there.

Chasing more HP is just whats done nowadays. If you dont mind being blown off at the lights by a 50cc step through scooter or the gopher on the footpath, then dont worry about modifying your car. But those of us who do like being able to put ya foot down and be pushed back into our seats, know that the money we have spent is all worth while.

Comments about certain male (some female =Betty) appendages being bigger or smaller just because there car is less powerful is stupid. You build a car how you want it. But the face on a falcodore driver when you've just smoked him is priceless.
