Hi

Just replaced my steering wheel and I just noticed that the rod inside the steering column (dont know what's it called) has a lot of play can be move side to side top to bottom for a few millimetres but the actual steering column doesnt move at all.

Do I need a new one or can it be adjusted?

The bushes in the top & bottom of the coloum need replacing, should be able to buy at any mini place, not a hard job to replace them.

Do I need to take the whole steering column? or can it be replaced without taking it off?

You have to pull the coloum out of the car, then pull the shaft out of the outer tube, replace the bushes & reassemble, its quite simple to do, no rocket science needed.

Now, in answer to your question, the shaft needs to be taken off the rack. Undo the bolts that hold the top of the rack to the dash. Take off the plastic covers over the indicator stuff and undo the screws that hold that to the column . Dont worry about the steering wheel it can stay on the column. Then lean down and the steering column fits onto the rack and is located by a splined male and female shaft. It is held in place by a 7/16 head sized bolt that passes throught a cut-out in the rack protrusion. Remove that bolt. The shaft should then slip off the splines and be free - brute force is not needed and will only do damage to the splines which are soft steel not hardened steel. It may need some effort but not brute force.

With the shaft out - you will see the clamp that holds the splines on the rack splines. Undo the lock blt on that and then you can withdraw the shaft entire from the column cover. Slip the top and bottom nylon spacers out and replace them. Either with replacement spacers or with some else that will do the job.

On reassembly - the steering column entire should just slide down over the rack splines. If not find out why and adjust - perhaps - the angle of the rack by undoing the four nuts that hold the rack to the car floor. Do not - do not do not - hammer the shaft onto the rack splines. The outcome of banging the shaft is to find a bag full of steering nothingness as the splines strip under a heaving steering load. Centre the steering wheel and the column before you slide it down, of course

Okay - add to that - for clubbie type steering columns, insert the ignition key into the column and turn it on. This is after the the wiring connector is pulled apart, of course.

The reason ot that the cllubbie type will not pull out of the outer if the steering lock is activated.

You do not have to drive out the shear bolts and remove the ignition cylinder.

As every one else has said, the job is not hard. Just needs attention to detail. !!!

I had a quick look this arvo and took the column plastic cover and I can see a white plastic/nylon type of material so thats the top bush/spacer?
it doesnt really look worn out or anything but it was up near the bolt with a funny head on it, I pushed it in and it stopped the play, now should that be sitting in flush with the outer column?

Yes - that is it - it should sit flush with the top of the column to act as a bush for the shaft - that is to stop the lateral movement. The funny bolt you speak about is probably the cancellor for the indicators.

Unless it has been recently changes then after 30 years it will be worn which is probably the reason it walked itself up the shaft.

Can I just remove the steering wheel and slip the nylon spacer up? save me removing the whole column

Yes you can BUT there is a similar bush at the bottom of the shaft. Just replacing the top one is only doing half the job. However, if just replacing the top one solves the problem then that is the main issue.

hmmm good point there
its just that I can only get the top bush the lower one needs to be ordered and will take a while
