ok did a compression test...

#4 plug was oily...and just over 100psi...add oil 140psi
#3 fine...120 and 140
#2 fine...120 and 140
#1 fine...120 and 140

so rings...and a head gasket?

Sympathy from she who must be obeyed...my roundie doesn't have any problems!
I'll have to sell a kidney soon.

I have been further utilizing the search function and a post by Twista regarding cost for eplacing rings
http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14401&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=rebore+cost

I think what may have happened to me is what Dr Mini says...

In my experience most A series with worn rings also have worn bores- a hone job won't get rid of the taper and wear at top of cylinder so ring seal will suffer.:

When my engine was rebuilt it was honed and not rebored to 1380...
Considering it was rebuilt for big end bearing failure this might have been an oversight by the engineering firm who did the rebuild.

Can it be confirmed for me that the next overbore will be 1380? It is currently +090".

Time for some stroking?

Thanks.

It's probably .094" (73.0mm) now, so yes the next rebore size is to 1380 (73.5mm).

You said compression was better 1000k's ago, but when was the motor last rebuilt?
(since your readings are lower than previously but still even I'd go out on a limb and suggest it's a different gauge)
If it's been high k's since last rebuild then I wouldn't jump to the conclusion you need rebore and new pistons - rings may buy you another few 10's of thousand k's. However if rebuild was recent then yeah sounds like the new rings couldn't cope with a sloppy bore for long.

rebuilt around 2.5 years ago...about 7500Kms. I was car pooling for most of the time so didn't get up alot of km's in her.
Same gauge. perhaps dodgy operator  I may have read 140 last time.
