Hi, does anyone no if there are any good carby refurbishers in Brisbane?

I need to get my 1.25" carby rebuilt as my minis not running right. Im looking to keep the original carb or maybe move up to twin 1.25" carbys.

The engines got a RC40 exhaust and a 40 thou overbore. What carb do you reckon i run on it?

Thx for your help

for simplicity run a 1 1/2 inch su (HS4) im assuming your a 998? heaps easier to tune than twins, also cheeper and will be big enough unless you get really realy serious on the tune front.

depends on your budget, application and size of the motor.

I presume it is a 998?

Go for either a single 1.5" SU, but use a GOOD manifold or don't bother, or go the twins!

I like the twins best, and once you get to know them they are no less easy to get going right than a single. Most issues are from peeps who haven't a clue so rubbish them instead of using them and learning something! Or, from using worn out linkages etc.

GO TWINS

I agree , twins are the way to go but only if you have or can get a good set that have been recently rebuilt and set them up properly . Otherwise the single 1 1/2" is a good trade off , but whichever way you go , see if you can find somewhere with the right gear and SU experience to tune them properly so you get the best out of them . Once you have the right needle/spring combo twins or single are as easy to maintain really but the wow factor of opening the bonnet is better with twins , they just look fast .....

I've got a Deluxe (998 + .020") and I was in a similar predicament but I ended up going the whole way and getting a set of twin HS2's. The difference they make is phenominal! i couldn't belive it, the amount of more power I got from a simple upgrade like that! It really made me notice how athsmatic the single 1.25 is.

With mine they are pretty much set and forget. All I do is top up the dashpots from time to time and that's it. I wouldn't say there that hard to set up (patience is a virtue). If in doubt get someone who knows alot about SU's and get them to get it running right for you.

You can buy the refurbish kits and do it yourself if you are handy and/or willing to learn. Can give you a hand if you like

I would probably go a 1.5" on a nice manifold. If the head has been opened up, or there are plans to do so in the future i'd go with a 1.75".

I have a 998 bored out to a 1030 and slightly worked over head etc. I have a 1.5 SU on it now but have found that it is struggling to keep up with the motor, so I am going to put a HS6 1.75 on soon and hopefully that will make a big difference to the power output...

Are you sure it is the Carb having trouble? Could be the cam, not enough fuel, poor inlet manifold & exhaust, points bounce, valve bounce, worn timing gear, poorly set cam timing, dizzy trouble, incorrect ignition timing, dodgy coil....or simply a run-down carb itself.

A good, well set up single 1.5" SU should easily deal with anything a 998 based motor can throw at it unless taken to extremes?

IMHO a single 1.75 is oversized for a 998, and you will get much poorer response.

I reckon you should get a dyno tune before and after to give us the results, I'll even send you a couple of dollars to have a beer afterwards!

cheers
matt

Matt68, the motor has been completly rebuilt and has only done 1100K's and the mechanic that built the motor suggests I go with the bigger carb plus I have consulted with a couple of Mini people and they are telling me, go the bigger carb.

It has a Pulsar electronic distributor, new Bosch GT40R coil, new electric fuel pump, new double row timing chain, 282 spec cam, extractors and the motor has been balanced as well..

I guess no harm can be done trying the bigger carb, can always put a new kit through the 1.5 and refit it if need be??
