Hey guys, I seem to have a small problem with my steering.

After I've gone around a corner, and I straighten up, my steering wheel is rotated slightly in the direction of the corner I took. This happens for both left and right hand corners.

Happens more so when the corner is bumpy.

Apart from this, there's not a lot of play in the steering wheel.

Any ideas?

my beetle used to do this (was a loose bolt on the flexible coupling (other end of the steering column).. theres a bolt to clamp it onto the shaft so on a bumpy bend (more shock force on the steering gear) it would actually jump a couple of splines.. tightened it up, realigned the steering wheel.. and was all good

it annoyed me for ages because i could never get the steering wheel straight.. one corner and shed be off center again.. i only worked out what it was when i was changing the fuel tank (above the steering gear in a beetle) because me just yanking the wheel left and right wasnt enough to make it happen.. only the extra force of the wheels trying to bounce back on a bumpy bend (i had 225s on the front)

yea, I just read and re-read your post and I have to agree with miniVan. Your splines either in the base of your column, or on your rack are stoofed and will need to be looked PRONTO!!

Worst case scenario is you will lose steering!!
Don't let it get to this stage.

I have heard of this happening a lot (splines shearing off)

I really hope this in't the splines on the Top of the steering column gone and the Steering Wheel is moving around under the nut! Either way, get a qualified mechanic to look at it yesterday!!

Usually it's just a sign the box is moving to and for in the U-bolts. Tighten 'em up..

I had the same problem not so long ago with my moke. It was the spines at the ind of the steering column. Cost me 25 bucks for a new shaft and I was away again!

Pull the carpet up and check the U bolts are tight is where I would start

i have a funny noise from my steering rack under accelleration, when i blip the throttle it bangs the rack, i checked to make sure nothing is hitting it in the engine bay thats what it sounds like. anyone??

No but its similar to my problem, where it makes a clicking/knocking sound when you accelerate and decelerate. It doesnt always make this noise and steve at brickworx said to put washers in the bolts that go into the top engine steady where the heater hose goes down (u know the one).
I havent done this as i need two people to do it and just wondering if this is a temporary fix or it does work.

Have a good look under the top steady on the bulkhead. My son's `78 Clubbie ripped the piece with the heater hose holes right out! It was creaking and groaning before I found the problem.
If it's cracked there, I would weld it, for more reinforcement bnicho suggested sticking a pedal box in there.

Spot on Doc, there is a crack in it. - the crack is in the plate thats bolted being down.
Is there new ones ya can buy? And will anything drop lose if i take the whole thing off - i was just going to put washers under one by one so nothign came falling apart if i undid them all.

Check the tightness of the rack and your tie rod ends (new??).

Watch your engine whilst you blip the throttle...does the whole engine move back and forth?? (engine steady)

Sub frame loose???

Exhaust header not bolted to gearbox??

Got me beat!! but sounds like something you should track down and fix!!

No, just unbolt the whole thing. As I said if it's cracked, weld it. Forget washers underneath- the bloody panel is thin tin..
Cut a nice piece of 3mm plate and it fit inside with the bolts thru it, or use a pedal box (stronger solution).
