If this ever happens...just carefully undo the sump plug and let a little out....messy as but better than pressurising the sump and blowing seals out.

If there is too much oil in it , it's probably best you don't touch it yourself given your lack of mechanical experience , the steel sump plug screws into cast aluminium and if you aren't careful you can strip the thread and do some expensive damage . Find a mechanic who's close by and can come out and adjust the level for you , it'll cost a little more but you'll be sure of it being right .

If can't find any mech around and if that's too much (over the max level), then for temporary measure, I think I will stuff a thin hose down in the dip hole and suck them from there. Or use a few connected Mckas straws and suck it out..hope won't get into my mouth.

Hope it will work. :(

Stop. Think. Listen.

Step 1) Read any post by "drmini in aust" and trust it.
Step 2) Ignore most other posts. (you just have to work out which ones)

Go to the car and pull out the dipstick and look at it.
If the oil is above the full mark by about 10mm you can start it and warm it up. Then shut it off, wait 30 - 40 seconds and dip the oil again.

The distance between the two marks on the dipstick is 600ml (1 litre = 1000ml)

Don't try to suck oil out of the engine. If you do you are a goose. It will not work.

The oil gauge in your car is not like a fuel gauge, it does not tell you how much oil is in the motor. It tells you what pressure the oil is operating at. When your motor is cold the gauge will read higher, when it reaches operating temperature the gauge will read lower.

Is it in a garage or on the street?

When will you be next with the car?

Hi guys,

This evening I got a chance to see my mini. So returning back to the dipstick.

Motor oil was poured almost 5 days ago, as mentioned, this raised the level on the stick from the middle of "M" of MIN (2.8cm from tip of dipstick) to some higher level (but forgot what that was). After that, it was left there untouched until today evening.

As I return to it today, open the bonnet, everythign is cold, it has been found the oil level on the stick almost past A" of MAX (5.1cm form the tip of stick).

After I started the engine for 3-5 mins, I stopped it, wait for a minute, pull the stick out, and Dr mini was right, the torque convertor actually took some of it, and the reading was right below "X" of MAX (I guess 4.6cm from tip of stick).

When I drove the car back to Chatswood from the city, I check it 1 min after I turned off the engine. Now, it is about 0.1-02 cm above the MAX line (about 4.1cm now from tip of stick).

I observe the oil gauge during the city-chatswood journey. Initially for the first 4-5 mins ,the oil pressure is at 75% (with or without putting pressure on the accelerator). After that, oil pressue in the gauge returns to a bit >50% mark. When accelerates, it jumps a tiny bit above 50%.

So roughly, there is a drop of 1cm (from 5.1cm-4.1cm), which is about 600ml of oil burnt from the start till end.

Hope that's all normal.
Ben A.

Ben, you will find the oil level in an automatic fluctuates a bit, mainly due to torque converter sloshing it around- as long as it's not much over `FULL' or below the ADD mark, it's fine. Don't sweat it, it ain't Apollo 12.
