Hello all,

Wanted to share my recent blue slip experiences with you in case any of you wanted to know. If not have a nice day

As you know I rebuilt my engine and had to go change the capacity and engine number that is displayed on my rego papers to be completely legal, mainly for insurance purposes.

I went and got a blue slip from a registered blueslip agent

Quote:
Facts:
1) Even though it says "Leyland 1275 LS" the engine capacity stated in the blue slip guy's book is 1273cc
2) He wanted to sight the engine number but since my plate is no longer there and the radiator cowl was covered in paint he did not bother as it was already on the rego papers. I said Is this a problem? he said unless you are selling it not really. He said better to get some thinners out and try to reveal the number again at some stage.
3) Total cost of $22

Myths:
4) Disc brakes are not required to be stated on the blueslip even for going up in capacity
5) Adjustable camber arms are legal according to this guy. He said many toyotas have them aftermarket and there are no issues so long as you don't "Make them" yourself and they are purchased items

I took the documents to the RTA to get them to change the record.

Quote:
Facts:
6) you need a receipt for the engine number
7) a general receipt for the purchase of the whole car including parts is not enough
8) had to write a statutory declaration stating this fact and that the prev owner is not contactable bla bla

Myth:
9) he did not check for disc brakes at all even though the capacity changed to 1273cc

Morale of the story, anytime you buy an engine, get a receipt, even if it says "for the sum of $0". My saving grace was that I did a revs check on the engine first and it was not already stolen. Not that the RTA checked anything anyway  How will they know this number was not already registered to someone else??

Anyway that's all... she's now officially a road terror

I didn't get a receipt for either of my 1275s, but I figure I won't need it as I already checked with rego that the number isn't currently in the system at all, so should be no problems. I know the people that I bought the motors off anyway though.

In ACT you can do a change of details at the motor registry, but I've always paid for an inspection station to do it, less hassle as they tend not to pick on the car unless they see something obviously wrong.

Nonetheless the car is still registered with an engine that hasn't been in there for almost two years, but I know the insurance company is happy so I'm not too fussed.

Good advice about the receipt Chong. I got one with mine but more for protection as I was coming back the next day to collect it . It was at his mother's house and the PO wasn't going to be there and his mother wasn't there when I paid him so I was just covering my butt  I kept it for good measure - looks like it may come in handy

If they look at the computer screen and then walk out the back and pick up the phone you know the motor is stolen or already registered. 8)

Might as well run
That way you can pack a cut lunch to take with you when the cops come and ask you to go for a ride with them. Thats about all you ill have time for as the RTA already has all your details both on the form and the monitor.

Yeah - when i did mine (also in NSW) the inspector really only wanted to know that the engine number was the same as was on the application. I had to ask him to notate the disc brakes (which he did) and that was then on the form when I went to the RTA.

I struck that 1273cc BS there too, but I convinced him it was an RTA typo by showing him the rego for my other car. 8)
You could have showed him the 1275 plate on the block..

NSW rego is pretty archaic...

I have never had such an ordeal as registering a trailer in NSW !

In country NSW you take your new motor to a blue slip qualified inspector (and pay fee) so that he can write the engine no on the piece of paper. You then take it to the local cop shop where they run the number to see if it has ever been reported stolen. If all is OK, they sign and you then take your signed blue slip to rego where they issue the papers.

What really p*&^ed me of recently was having to pay Rego something like $30 so they could provide a handwriten scrap (no exaggeration) of paper with the name, old rego and car details on it. I then had to take this piece of paper to the pink slip man who checked the car, wrote the details on the proper from which I then took back to rego so that they could compare the form with the details they had in the computer (and which I had just paid to have them write on the paper). All this because the car had been in storage for a few years.

BTW don't worry about receipts if a stat dec will do. The Post Office will do you one for $2.

Cheers, Ian

Hi, Just out of curiosity.

My rego paper was transferred to me from the previous owner; on which it stated:
- engine capacity: 998.0 and a few other things such as:
------ chassis Number: YA2S5725
------ Engine number: 99H119H1473
-------Axle Code R11

However, the seller of this mini told me the engine of this mini is 1275 (bore 998). Note the engine doesn't actually match what is stated on the rego paper!

Will there be any problem the next time when I renew my rego? or if I am not gonna register the next time and wanna re-registered again after a few years, will there be much problems when I need a brand new blue slip for RTA?

Also where do you find out about the details such as chassis number, engine number, and Axle code. Does the numbers have meanings or just an identifier merely?

What is Axle code?

Thanks heaps,
Ben A.

IMHO??? you bet. What does the number stamped on the block say? If it doesn't match the paper your inspector is risking his licence if he doesn't send you away to have it sorted. In my experience sorting means you will need a police check.

"engine of this mini is 1275 (bore 998)" This is gobbledygook...its either 1275 or 998. The engine number quoted is for a 998 (maybe 1098) / - so,unless someone has been really naughty, (its illegal to change the number stamped on the engine) your engine is a 998/1098.

Quick check: does it have sidecovers (at the back under the manifold) ..Yes = 998/1098; no = 1275. Does the heater tap on the run in line with the centreline of the car or does it sit at an angle (straight = 998/1098; angle = 1275).

Good luck, Ian

1)
The block? you mean the motor? For the inspector, you mean the pre-purchase inspector? so he must also check the rego engine number and the actual engine number in the bay. Police check? woo...how?

2)Oh no.

3)
I will go out to take a look now. I am a novice. Where is the heater tap? and where you can find all these numbers?

Alrite, what will be the impact if it really turned out to be a problem. What's the impact to me and to the seller of this car?

Just go back to the seller of the car and ask him for a reciept for the engine to the amount of $0. Or write a stat dec to get the engine number changed.
