Hi

I have been wondering what type of crankcase ventilation my '65 998 Cooper should have :?:
Would it be just the simple pipe from tappet chest down the back of the motor or would it be the pcv setup :?:
I would dearly love to hear from any 998 Cooper owners as to what their car has, what their engine number is and if this is the way it was originally or has it been changed.

Hope to hear from you all soon

Cheers
Steve

I don't own one- but some of the UK 998 Coopers were built with the exact same system as the S had- a breather canister on the sideplate up to a Smiths PCV valve on the inlet manifold.
Not sure what year this came in on the 998...

Yeah I had a PCV fitted to mine, but it is /was incorrect for the period. I was more interested in keeping a clean sump and driveway in this case.

With all respects to the ever knowledgeable and omnipresent benevolent Doctor I believe they did not. According to Parnell it is incorrect at least for the 64 model. Were they available in Australia in 65?

Here's the Parnell "Original Mini Cooper and Cooper S" page which gives a good picture of the bay. On the next page it states:

"Crankcase ventilation is achieved by means of a vent pipe in the left hand tappet chest cover connected to a shaped hose which feeds excess fumes down behind the engine block and out into the atmosphere."

Edit: I just read on further in the Australian section and found that if the engine number had a "D" in it, ie 9FD/SA/L then it did indeed have Positive crankcase pressure. oops

My engine had the prefix 9F/SA/L so was incorrect in having the PCV.

Hey Mick

I have that book and that is what has me wondering. As you said the book says if the engine no was 9FD/Sa/L then pcv, 9F/Sa/L was not, but my engine is a 9Y/Sa/H which of course the book does not mention.

I have been in contact with someone who knows of a 998 with documentary evidence of it being a '65 and mine is numbered after that, in fact mine is the latest known. All dated components so far looked at are late '64, I don't believe components would have made their way into a car extremely quick so that could also substantiate a date of '65.

Cheers
Steve

With the last one reported as being produced in December 64, there's all kinds of reasons I suppose as to why it would be 65 badged. Parnell is not the be all and end all of minis, and there is a mistake or two in the book, fantastic as it is. Is there any old photos of press cars from old Wheels magazines or the like?

this is the breather on mine, engine number 9Fa/Sa/L/1662, which according to some sources is for a 997 Cooper but as you know, it is a 998 and registered in 1965. All the components that have dates stamped on them range from 2/64-8/64. I've only ever come across one site that made reference to it as a 998 and that was a few years ago and the site is no longer available. If you're coming to the next MOCQ MGM, would you mind bringing the Parnell book along as I wouldn't mind checking it out.

I had always wondered what the threaded hole on the back of the blanked off fuel pump position was for.....and now I know.... :)

I can't believe you haven't got a Parnell David! They're essential reading I reckon.

Yeah, I know. I think I may have to get the Parnell book. The book I have on the Cooper is by Jeremy Walton which also has quite a lot of good info and refers to the PCV being adopted September 64 on all Cooper and 'S' models which is another pointer for mine being probably mid 64 even though it has always been registered as 65.

Hi Guys, I'm glad you two are speaking to each other!

As you know, my register is very low on info on the 998's of the 50 cars I have listed, only five are 998's

Yours is still the last one on the register Steve, I am sorry I can't be of more help, but I am looking! I will go through my pictures of MDU, there was a 998 presented there!

Look after those cars guys they are rare beasts!!

Mick, do you have any record of the numbers for your car? I take it you don't have it any more? do you know where it went? :?

Cheers...... Graham

I'll see if I can dig the numbers up, they're around here somewhere on an old rego docket.

I do know that it went to one of the Skinner Bus Lines heirs up in Toowoomba Queensland in 1996. I never heard of it again except for rumors.
