Thanks all, opening at the top worked easily... also nicking a plastic spout from a metal jerry can also worked

I must of had a blonde day/moment in time

No more smelling like thinners!!

I can sleep inside tonight - woohoo!

OK Old school pharmacy tip here - 1st as already mentioned pour from cans with offset caps with the opening at the top when horizontal. 2nd if pouring onto a smaller hole lay a round stick ( small cross section square ) across the opring opening

OK Old school pharmacy tip here - 1st as already mentioned pour from cans with offset caps with the opening at the top when horizontal. 2nd if pouring onto a smaller hole lay a round stick ( small cross section square ) across the opening of the can ( near the opening so you can pour down the stick which has its bottom end inside the narrower opening.

We used this trick with beakers and large measuring cylinders and pouring into narrow necked bottles using the stiring stick to pour down.

You can use two hands - one holding the stick and the other the pouring item or if small enough you can hold the pouring item on one hand near the top and hold the stick in place with the forefinger and receiver in the other.

This method relies on the fact that the surface tension of the liquid forces it to flow down the stick and dosen't splash or spread as it pours.
