I have a set of twins, but want to know what model they are from.

AUD 15 L and R. I have a funny idea they might be 997 Cooper but not 100%, want to clarify it.

Twin HS2's (1 1/4s), they look like any other set of Cooper or 'S' twins on original manifold, with take off for vacuum advance. Seller told me they were from a 998 Cooper but the type no. doesn't match up. Neither AUD 15 L or R are listed (from what I can see) in the SU carburettors tuning techinques book (little blue SU book), but neither is the 997 Cooper, only 1275 'S' and 998 Cooper.

Any help appreciated!

I just had a look through my extensive archive and decided to google it instead and came up with 997 Cooper.

If it is a 997 Cooper the manifold should be located by the studs and it should have no vac ports in the top of it.

It has vacuum ports. So possibly, 997 carbies, on a later manifold, or stolen 997 tags.

What is the casting number on the manifold?

12A661 is on the top of the manifold.

Quick final look.....

Under '12A661' on a raised pad, it has the letter 'P'

On the underside it has 'MOWOG'.

It doesn't have those round bits (fitting rings I think they are called) that protrude from the end of the inlet (Cooper S??).

Has one vacuum hole, a cast flat bit for a second one, but with no hole drilled.

Doesn't mount to the studs, rather mounts to a washer, as in the edges of the head end are flat and not cast in a way that would make them fit around studs.

Also has a stud that sticks up on the manifold, which I used to bolt down an accelecerator bracket.

looks mospt like this minus the number 'AEG347'


I'd say it's a 998 Cooper manifold, with 998 Cooper carbies but with a rare tag (only RHS, missing left...)

better yet... looks exactly like this without the fitting rings.

Looks to me like it had fitting rings, but it's been ground out. Big holes now.
Needed the rings to locate it properly, the flanges are short, not like the 997 ones that reach the studs and locate on them.

My searching has come up with the number 12A309 as the manifold for a 998 Cooper.

I hope this is right as that's what I've got to go on mine.

After a certain date the 998 Cooper motors were given the PCV system and they needed the vac port on the manifold for the vac hose.

I think that Graham is the Cooper carby/manifold expert?

I think this is correct and the date is known in the UK, does anyone know when this occurred in Oz The change to PCV on the 998's I mean

June 64 was the date in UK, engine prefix 9FD/Sa/H.
As the 998 stopped here in 1965 I doubt any Oz 998s got a PCV.
I've only ever seen them on the 1275S here.
