dude what is with everyone and the who mechanic thing, im sick of explaining it.. i have no time to do work on my own car, it is my every day driver and the only time i get to myself i wish to relax not stress and work on my own PLUS i would prefer a specialist to work on my car as he knows what he knows more about the car then i do and has the parts. i will do the odd jobs to my own car if need be but i would prefer bigger jobs done by specialists

just cause someone is a mechanic doesnt mean they work on there own cars if anything a mechanics car from time to time will run like crap or will always need bits done because they never get around to doing it, but i hate being like that so im happy to spend the money to get the work done then me have to worry about it. plain and simple. work wont allow me to work on my own car in the workshop so things need to be done at home and if thats gonna be the case jobs like this i would prefer to be sent off. even mechanics send jobs to other mechanics to be done, im doing the same thing only with my own car

Joe , I have no idea how many nights I'd spent on a tarp whichever mini I had at the time with a dolphin torch doing things (rubber uni's included) , I'm not a mechanic , I needed the car to get to work the next morning and I'd imagine I was on similar money to a 3rd year apprentice and couldn't afford to pay someone to do things so I did them myself . Pretty much everyone else here is in the same boat , it's not about not being able to work on it at work , it's finding a patch of grass or concrete wherever you live (try replacing the diff seals on freezing concrete in a unit block in Picton on a winter's night with the neighbours all watching out the windows ...) and doing it . Beg , borrow , buy or steal a set of ramps and have a go yourself . You'll only be watching crappy TV shows otherwise and you'll be learning about your mini at the same time . I would reccomend getting a good inspection/lead light though , dolphin torches never seem to put the light in the right spot

I understand where Tiny is coming from. We have all had to do mechanical repairs in torrid conditions - brake pads in the rain because its metal to metal and the need to go to work the next day, etc etc.

Many apprentices are actually encouraged to do "extra-curricular" work such as hot motors as part of their training. As are apprentice panel beaters, spray painters etc encouraged to do fancy "own" jobs - it expands their knowledge of the trade.

However, I suspect Tiny works for a car dealership where there is very tight control over all the mechanics there. Each job has a time card and should only take that time. There is no such thing as stitch in time repair. If its not part of the service or requested job then you dont do. You report it but dont do any unrequested or unauthorised jobs. AND you have to do the job properly the first time and in time. Obviously the employer does not want "own jobs" and does not believe in expanding the tradesmanship. Each to their own.

I can fully understand that when you have a hoist and all the right gear to do jobs properly that lying on cold concrete and in bad light is a very poor substitute. Lack of equipment encourages poor workmanship and sending your car to another mechanic is a good idea in this case.

Our local mechanic has 38 years of extensive experience in many mechanical areas. However, he will not work on trucks or tractors. He says he just doesn't have the right equipment or facilities for that sort of heavy work. Its what Tiny is saying as well.

Aww Brad - thats not the way the thread was supposed to go and its not what I meant. There are very few cars of the same high quality as yours regardless of marque. I have been told that by people who have seen it and photographed it.
