The resistive spark plug serves no purpose until such time as the spark leaps the gap, it then slows the discharge of the coil and lengthens the duration of spark. As a result the spark is weaker, but lasts a little longer. The total energy consumed is the same however..

Therefore it's not a suppression device.

Mick (or anyone), do you have any ideas on the question about what resistance is a good resistance? And what resistance should be run with what plugs?

No idea really smac, but I found the old Top Gun and others using `carbonised string' inside start to break down in wet weather once they get to 4K or so, that's why I used to bin `em. :lol:
The inductive wound ones should last longer, my Bosch ones still measure 1.8K or so after 3 years use. :wink:

Put my set on today...they do look good and are very neat.
I had to get a set for the Pulsar..they are a little to long but not a big complaint as they are much better than the last set we had :wink:
Chong old set of Leads must have been crap as my Rev's didn't change at all :lol:

I think all my leads were as bad as each other..just a slight adjustment to even out and no more touchy :wink:

I measured his old ones, they were like 8K ohm... :shock:

I had a slight, irregular miss on my moke, so I ordered a set of these. The miss is gone and its idle speed is noticeably up (feels like the choke is out on it). They look neat, and the car runs really smooth now.

Agreed, it looks tidier (I took the photo that way so that the spaghetti wiring didn't show) :wink:

I just need to put the chrome dipstick in and the moke is ready for concours. :lol:

Old thread resurrection time...

Dropped into Repco this morning to buy some plugs and filters and I asked for a price on some leads. He didn't have any in stock but said he could order in - cost $90-something!!! :shock:

So i said not to worry. Then on my drive to work I remembered this thread, gave GR a call and took a late lunch to pick a couple of sets up ($50 each). Figured I might as well have a spare set seeing as 2 sets only cost a few $$ more than whatever brand Repco had for 1.

Looking forward to fitting them and my new spark plugs (as inspired by the spark plug thread the other day...)

Also bought a K&N air filter from the USA.

Wonder if i'll notice the difference with any/all of the above...?

PS what a shed!!! Reminds me of my old mini mechanic in Edinburgh - the place was a rabbit warren of old mini parts, engines, everything. But the guy knew where every single item was, where it had come from and whose it was too!

isnt it great, me and dane couldnt figure out what to do or where he was, turns out we were sitting on the street and had to go down his driveway :lol:
(that was of course after we rang him :oops: )

i hadnt even seen this thread until now, im due for a new set soon, when the time comes i'll be buying from GR for sure after how he's treated me.

could the little increase in RPM be due to the lack of resistance in the lead causing the charge to arrive at the plug earlier therefore advancing the timing?

after testing one of my Bosch leads @ 1.75Kohm, I consulted my radio/electronics guru at work - he agreed that the resistance is only there for radio interference, and that the (substantially) lower resistance would give a better spark because the "rise time" of the charge reaching the end of the lead is a lot quicker - electricity isn't ON and OFF - putting a charge on a piece of wire will build up (really f*cking fast of course) - higher resistance means the build up will be slower, and I guess that the whole charge mightn't reach the end of the lead before the spark jumps, lower resistance means that the whole charge is likelier to hit the end of the lead before the spark jumps.... or something
