Perhaps your oil is too thick,..takes a while to warm up and give you all your gears.

Hmmmm maybe....oil mention that :D Its more likely to be nothing to do with hot or cold but the number of times the clutch pedal is depressed....30mm is a long way down in such a small reservoir

I have a similar problem with my 94 Rover. First couple of gear changes on a cold morning are near impossible to get in - especially the first 1st to 2nd change. Also happens in summer when I run a thicker oil because I spend so much time stopped in peak traffic.

I just put it down to the oil being too thick when its cold to let the syncros spin freely. It's been like this for 5 years/170,000km and has never got any better or worse. No other gearbox or clutch problems in that time either.

What grade of oil are you using?

In best Peter Sellers voice....it is not-a my car :!: (please go back and read the first post).

Dunno about trying "thicker" oil in summer...whats thicker?? gearoil???

If your cooling system is functioning correctly you shouldn't need to change the type of oil you use year round....however, if it was me I would start experimenting with a couple of different oils as recommended on Ausmini.....like KMX from KMart!! or maybe synthetic...but nothing "thicker". How often do you change your oil ??? Regular oil changes reap benefits.

If no modern oil helps with your problem...then pull the gearbox out and get it looked at

Usually use Penrite HPR30 changed regularly. The car doesn't overheat, but when you get stuck crawling along for half an hour in 40+ degrees with your sump a couple of inches above a lump of hot ashphalt with 4 other lanes of vehicles pumping out heat I prefer to keep the oil presure a little higher at idle by using HPR40 in the hotter months.

Very cruel treatment for any Mini...get yourself a dunger to crawl to work in
