Ok I have a 12A185 head complete with valves, double valve springs etc Red marking on the valve spings.

Is this any use?

What did it come off?

Its off an early MK1 Cooper S. Its what was know as the "hot head" or the "red head" because it was prone to cracking. BMC changed to a different head later on (casting number AEG163) and this seemed to solved the cracking problem.

They came with double valve springs although the red markings are probably an after market set - I simply dont know.

After all this time, if it hasn't cracked and its treated with respect then it probably wont.

Nigel,

12A185 is early Mark 1 "S" head
1.401" Inlet & 1.218" exhaust. The valves should just about be touching each other!
21.4cc chamber capacity.
Whether its any good depends on condition of valve seats. Early Mk 1 heads were prone to cracking. But if you can find someone skilled enough to fit unleaded inserts, it would probably be an excellent head IMO. :) :) :)
