Dropped off a huge tub of bolts, nuts, washers, brackets, clamps, fittings etc to be ZINC plated yesterday. Every bolt and nut I could find. Probably 4 cars worth that I have stripped over the years.

i picked them up this morning.

Up to 50kgs of stuff is $85 + GST

You can get either GOLD colour zinc or SILVER colour zinc plating. The gold zinc gives you that 'new car' look, where every bolt under the bonnet is new and fresh looking.

You MUST clean up all your bolts and bits first. The acid dip that is done as part of the plating process DOES NOT remove paint from bolt heads or grit from threads. The platers stressed this before I dropped off the stuff. I spent hours on the bench wire wheel cleaning up all my stuff, and the results are AMAZING! The bolts and nuts came out better than new.

They did say that a lot of people bring in old stuff and don't clean it first, and are then disappointed when they pick it up and it looks shite. Also, anything that is CAST will not plate very well. New castings will, but old stuff will not. I did try getting a few cast brackets plated, and they came out crap.

I'm sure it would be nice to have your own plating kit, but for what I paid and the amount I had done in less than 24 hours, why would you bother?

I'll chuck a pic into a future part of my resto story in TME.

Good work GT - can you advise where you got your plating done?
Cheers :)

Quick comment on temperate and tropical fish.

Fish only have a very narrow band of temperature in which they can live. Cold water fish such as salmon, cod etc cannot live in the waters around Sydney Harbours. Like wise the port jackson shark would not be able to live in Bass Strait or in Port Douglass. And so it goes.

About 32 Degrees C is the maximum that even tropical fish can survive in. The ultra cheap aquarium heaters struggle to cope with a 100 litre tank.

Use a good heavy duty resistance heater, steal it from a R***m hot water service, mostly its the tank corroded not the heater or thermostat.

Elite Plating in Smithfield

http://www.truelocal.com.au/business/el ... smithfield

They were the nicest and most helpfull people to deal with, and FAST! They had the job done in 5 hours!!

They are ZINC specialists. They don't do chrome though... :(

Jimbo, if you want a sneak peek you can drop in on the weekend. I know how you love BLING.... The tub of bolts look like a mound of gold coins... pirate treasure!! 8)

Ever seen a rusty shark? Even in salt water they don't rust.
Must be the zinc. (that could explain the colour) 8)

I would suggest that some of the sharks that get caught may have been a bit rusty

hey, i work for WURTH AUSTRALIA and we are the worlds largest fastners and consumables company! i'm also a qualified toolmaker/fitter/welder by trade. I thought i'd let you know that i can get plating done for $70 inc gst. but with my mini i am replacing all my bolts with brand new zinc bolts! i'm sure re plating bolts sounds cheaper but it doesn't make the bolts any stronger in tensile stregnth! replacing with brand new gives me peace of mind! p.s cadmium is only bad if you melt it!! so don't sniff it!!
