I think if you are determined enough to get it right you must also be determined enough to find the correct basis for reference.

I would be hesitant in using the Powerhouse Mini K as a sole reference source as it is obviously modified. Immediately on looking at it one can see the Cooper S front bumper and the wooden dash, what else is non-standard :?:

As Mick said, the car has been repainted, no guarantee the stickers were put in the "right" spot.

Cheers
Steve

Mick, I rarely laugh at emails, but you've painted such a vivid picture!
I can see it now. Very, very funny.

20mm, that's way off for something that should be even on both sides. But, as you say, it's close enough for something that has be...good enough. :? Just quietly, I'm very surprised.

In all seriousness though, thanks for making those measurements.
They prove that you were right to be sceptical.
I hadn't thought of the consequences of a respray.
That's an obvious point to make.

Still though, it's great to know that a mini has made it into the Powerhouse museum. Obviously some serious-minded (and forward-thinking) people were on the acquisitions committee at the time.

Thanks again. So much good advice!

Good point Panthersteve.

So, for the Mini K, bumperettes and overriders wern't even an optional extra from the factory?

I bought my '71 shell already re-painted and with complete bumper assemblies, both front and rear. I left off with them on the car, and still have them, but I'm questioning even that now.

Sports 850, I look forward to those measurements. Thankyou in advance.
Perhaps they'll back up (hopefully at least) one of the measurements that Mick has taken!

Ah no, never meant to be cynical or sceptical either, BMC crack me up with the work standards. It's a snapshot of Oz industry in the 70's. Near enough WAS good enough, it's not just a saying. There's many stories of stamps being missed, spot welds not being applied, etc etc...If anyone wonders why BMC Leyland went broke, you just need to focus on these little things, they were not anywhere near world (ie. Japanese) standard.

Still that is why I like these machines, they aren't perfect, they take some care and can be fascinating in their eccentricities.

Well , I'm not as much help as I hoped , from the two brochures there is only one shot of a mini with the K sticker and it's bad ... The mini at the top left corner is it . This is from the single page "MINI-K , the great leap forward printed March 1970 . Also , I've always seen the sticker on the 1/4 panel near the lower hinge , not on the top of the guard in front of the seam like this one :?

This is from the other one , multi page booklet with a psychadelic MINI K cover also using the phrase the great leap forward , printedMarch 1970 . In this one they have several K's without the stickers so if they didn't feature the stickers in their own advertising material in 1970 (towards the end of the run) you wonder if they often missed ....

Thanks heaps for the scans sports850.
It's always interesting to see original material. That interior is so plush.

As soon as the badge and decals are on, I'll post photos of my car in the relevant thread. I reckon I'm two weeks away from the all-important drive down to Vicroads...I'll say in advance that my car is far from original. But I love it anyway.

I've made a point of the badges because I think they're such defining things. Well, perhaps the most defining thing until the bonnet goes up!

Although not original, I always thought they would look good in an enameled badge, like the UK flags people sometimes put in the same spot.
