I'm not 100%, but I think the twin cam excel is the same motor as my gsr lancer - 4g61 1600 16v (or is it lantra sports / s coupe?).

I snapped a belt at 110kph / 3700rpm - 5+ bent valves and cracked a few of the guides.

Had only done 30,000km after the PO had a mechanic put a new one in at 100,000. One of the rollers on the belt pre-tensioner was a little sticky and didn't get checked properly.

Long story short, I did all the labour - had the head rebuilt at a shop.

Gaskets = $100+
Head rebuild with valves / guides = $500+
Timing belt = $80
roller bearing = $70

I'm sure it cost me over $1000..

The price for a full reco head off the shelf was over $1400.

Low kms engine on ebay the other week - $250 complete with everything + gearbox etc, should have got it as a spare.

I hope you didn't do too much damage to it, I'd prefer fixing my mini over doing that job again.

All the other belts for it now appear to be made in China- I tried one and found it a VERY loose fit.

India was the creator of my new timing chain. Is it a little loose?? its hard to tell the difference between it and my old disintegrating chain o_0

Most new chains now are c-r-a-p, even duplex. I've seen new chains in UK boxes as loose as what I took off.
Once upon a time the Poms sold us good (Renold) chain. Not now it seems.
Best duplex ones now I reckon are the Jwis, and Rolon. Not as cheap as some..

what about that rubber one you had doc, you said it was going to benjamin,

Lantra's the same as the Lancer.

The Twin Cam excel has its own engine. Complete with Plastic Rocker Cover.

i've been told the most expensive part to manufacture on a exel is the glass, i believe it too.
my sisters nissan exa broke a timing belt once, ruined the engine.

Been talking with my dad about it. IS possible that it is a broken tooth not a broken belt. We hope to have a look at it today. Depends on the weather and how busy Dad is with work. Will keep everyone updated for sure!!

Good news is the timing belt isn't actually snapped. Gonna replace it and see if that fixes the problem. Everyone keep your fingers crossed for me!

i broke a timing chain in my Bitsamissing Nimbus at aout 100kph...

i think the planets had aligned because it did no damage at all, and all it needed was the new chain (incl removing the fragments of the old one) and i could drive it again....

unfortunately.... :P
