I've got a bit of a steering rack obsession going at the moment, I pulled the rack out of a clubman tonight, it was very very sloppy....

taking it apart, I found a home-made looking spacer between the shoulder of the inner race of the outmost pinion bearing, and the plate that goes over it. This is wierd, because all the others I've pulled apart haven't had any spacer, and the outer race is hard up against the outer race... I checked everything against another (ex. deluxe) rack and eventually found that the body where the pinion goes on the rack from the clubman is about 5mm longer than the deluxe rack... but the bearings and pinion and everything else in it was the same, even the casting number on the body. Hence the need for a bodgy spacer. The clubman rack has been rebuilt at some point, and I'm assuming they used the wrong bearings, or something...

I'm going to ditch the body from the rack out of the clubman and rebuild the deluxe one and put it in, but can anyone shed light on the differences?

What ears...? come to think of it I guess it's not original, as I can see farmer Spiro cut the subby with oxy to remove the rack  .

the length of the rack is the same... just the part of the body that the pinion goes through is longer taller - it's wierd - but we have someone on the case :)
