Ok, thanks Steve, I was waiting for you to pipe in. I'll do some talk with the builder tommorow, as I want to upgrade my Mini not just fix it.

As recommended, stick with the remote case. It's worth going for the upgrade of larger idler gear bearings in both the flywheel case and gearbox housing. Find someone who can line-bore them when they are bolted together, and as Doc suggested check the squareness of the thrust faces. It might also be worthwhile opening up the oil feed holes a smidge to increase the supply to the bearings.

And change the oil often. Boxes I've stripped with worn idler thrust faces all had crappy, scungy `oil' in them. Grinding paste, really...

If you currently have a 12G1128 box I'd stick with it, just get a replacement casing/gearbox to rebuild. I had an idler gear go on my old engine, stripped five teeth on the gear, destroyed the transfer casing, oh and completely destroyed the gearbox, metal shavings all through it. I've still got the box since I figure if I ever want a remote box again the damage to the casing is probably fairly easy to repair.

Re the rod versus remote, I am still happy with rod boxes over remote. Not that I mind that much, I have had both (and magic wand) but I've driven good remote boxes and I didn't like them all that much compared to my rod box. I only ever converted my car to rod change because I needed it back on the road and it's all I had (after destroying the remote box!)

Ok well I think I've made my decision. Another 22G1128 case, with my current gears etc in it. With late model transfer gears.

Thanks for all the help and quick replies guys!
