well this will kinda be lengthy.....
ok well Jester has been out of action for a little while, after the Roadcraft driving day when the Generator decided to give up the ghost on the way home.
so ive been saving up and i bought an 85AMP altenator and got it fitted on monday. took the car out for a drive and was running SHMICKO!
thought ok i should be right to take the car to work (tuesday night)........how wrong i was..

the drive to my work was fine...the ride home was...well short to say the least. got in the car (930pm) and started it up, switched the lights on for no more then about 2 seconds, before the lights cut out, and PLUMES of smoke came from the dash in front of me, and out the 'demister vents'....
i just immdietly switched off the car and called for a ride home..

later on....(roughly 11pm)
got the car in my convoy and towed it home.

today i went to work in my tow vehicle  and when i arrived home i preceded to try to see what went on behind my dash. the pics should explain a bit now...
my dash when i got the car
Image
and now after i 'attacked' it all :(
Image
Image
the culprit???
Image
tow strap still attached
Image
Image
engine bay with the new altenator
Image
OH I FORGOT TO MENTION.....i believe that my car MAY be an 850...due to this panel thats welded as though there was a Majic wand gear box originally in the car. Also the fact that the new gearbox hole is rather 'roughly cut' gearbox hole, am i correct in thinking that it may not be a deluxe and is an 850??

thank you for your lengthy attention, i hope that its not something serious with my wiring loom or something
cheers

That looks like it would be a 850 shell to me, even the hole where the remote shift comes through looks smaller (and rougher cut) than the hole in my car. My car also doesn't have a 'patch' where the magic wand would have gone.

Surely you would've been able to tell from the compliance plate????

Good luck with rewiring - don't just replace the single wire that's burnt, you obviously have a problem elsewhere you need to fix.

Bad luck with the wiring, my best bet would be an auto electrician.
By the looks of the patch and the "new" hole think you may be right, post your body numbers and someone may be able to confirm :? good luck getting it fixed, again

I should add: if your car has YMA2S1 on the compliance plate it was an 850.

hmm yeah the thing about that....i cant FIND a compliance plate at ALL....i think that the previous owner took the whole compliance plate and all that when he was removing rust (it looks like new metal) in the engine bay pic, on the left hand side there is a rusting plate (near the black taped up wire with the red on it) and it has a NEW VIN number thing that was obviously put there for rego purposes to pass it...is there anywhere else on the body in which theres a number or somthing i can identify the body with?? cause the engine is an 1100cc (taken from a clubby in 76 i think)
Cheers

Show me a pic of the door catch. And a pic of the front valance (the valance will say if it's pre mid-64-ish, mine is about July '64 and has original style, full front.)

From the pic of the door open it appears to be a sliding window catch, jsut like my car. But might not be, they are very different.

Are the tail lights 2 screw or 3 screw? Bearing in mind most of these tell tale 850 stuff can be changed and the ID plate would tell all, but we work with what we can, in hoping that the car hasn't been overly modified.

If it happened when the lights came on, then you probably could of just driven it home, just without ur lights on.....

With out numbers is very hard. Magic wand hole is a good indication and your wipers do stop on the drivers side, which im led to believe was an early trait. Whats your boot number plate panel look like?

3 screw ay. They are british tail lights as oppossed to the aussie 2 screw. Which means the car is pre a certain date. If the front valance is full, it's a '64 or earlier therefore it's an 850 or Cooper, but since it's got magic wand hole, it's an 850.

Believe it or not my Mini is a July, '64 850, with some unusual features, some original others most definitely not! Boot lids, doors, badges, tail light type, gear shifters, brakes etc.... are all easily changed.

Door catchs, front aprons etc.... etc... are not changed so easily.

also my wiper motor has a 65 as the last set of digits, but whether or not this has been replaced once or more times is a mystery...

Starter motors are date marked aswell, if the dates the same, you can be 99% sure that it is of that year and those bits are original.

From those pics, congratulations, you got an 850 there 8) . It was a sliding window Mini, but no longer. It's been modernised, just like mine. :)

(PS the front valance won't tell you much as it appears to be replaced.)

Did you install a Relay for the lights? Or was the full 85 amps from your new alternator travelling down to your light switch?

Might have been what let the smoke out.

You will need to check all of the wiring on that cuircuit, including the wiring to the tail lights, and replace. It may have also melted the nearby wiring, so check that carefully.

FIT a relay! Get the New ERA relay has two built in fuses. There is a how to on this site I think.

Carry a fire extinguisher.

Good Luck

M
