My car is an early 1965 Mini Deluxe. Would have been remote gearchange originally, yet it has the wagic wand hole with metal welded over, from the factory. From what I can tell it was probably an 850 shell than was converted to Deluxe spec at the factory. It has windup striker plates on the B-pillars, but has evidence of the holes for the sliding window strikers, with a thin metal plate neatly welded over to convert it. BMC did funny things from the factory, especially in the 1965 model year.

Even though you don't have a compliance plate, it would help to identify it is you supply the body number stamped on the firewall above the master cylinders. A high number would suggest an 850, a low number an early Deluxe.

<edit>Just noticed you mentioned it has a restamped body number. That doesn't help. Though I would agree with the others I think it is an 850 that somebody has converted, not an early Deluxe.

yeah im seriously considering that cause im sick of my 'candlelights' ....
that or go your route and fit angel eyes
having a talk to the auto electrician and hes coming for a "visit" in the next few days to just sort out wtf is going on...

i think it is that there is no relay for the headlight switch
i traced that buggered up wire and it goes into the speedo and the other end is to the headlight switch...
i also traced the wires (as much as i could) to the headlights, and they seem to be allright...
ALSO...no other wires seem to be harmed, just that one. so i might be lucky and get off with chucking a new wire in there (with a relay this time  ) and hopefully i should be right.......hopefully :(

also the RELAY.
it just regulates the power to a sensible level right??
should i maybe be wiring up one to the stereo system??, because i was running this before the 'incident' and it was all going fine (especially no smoke! ) but it was only the lights i hadnt used yet, then when i came home that night......poof (so to speak)

btw thank you to all so far for your help....
i really appreciate it....even if i am a complete D***head for not getting a relay installed
Cheers

Just another quick note for you. In your post, you said that the "generator" packed it in and you have now fitted an alternator so have you gone from positive earth to negative earth :?: or was the generator already changed for negative earth operation. If so, was the wiper motor also changed for negative earth operation. Looking at your pics, the red/white wire that has been fried is associated with the parkers/dash lights and dimmer if fitted. You need a wiring diagram to sort it out.

Far far from it mate......

It simply allows a low current circut to swith on/off a high current circut. No need for the stereo.

allrighty update time:

while i was at work today, (not to my knowledge) the electrician dropped in to have a looksee....and the culprit was.....

a bulb holder on the left hand side of the speedo that was shorting due to it being pulled out of its housing and was touching on the metal surrounds
(dunno if that makes sence but its hard to explain)

anyway im stoked its fixed again *touch wood*!!!! :D

cheers for the help people :D

What value fuses are you running? Really a fuse should of blown before you melted your wiring.
