Hey Guys,
Im replacing thee suspension in my 78' clubman with that spax hi-lo kit off minisport. fitted the rear's fine. but I'm having trouble getting the cones and ball cups out of the front suspension.. not sure how to. anyone have any tips??

You need to compress the rubber spring/s, to do this you need the special tool. If you don't have the tool then it's best to take it to a specialist, it doesn't take long.

Or you can take the grinder to the trumpets, cut them in half and the rest will fall out.

your best buy the tool, as you'll still need the spring compressor to install the front hi-lo's. if you can fit the fronts without a compressor, then its probably time to replace the cones anyways. the spring compressor is less than $100 from memory

where in melbourne are you?? and are you able to drive your car? might be able to help you out with some one in melb who has a spring comp and can do the job for you for a small fee.

dont forget to remove the rebound rubber under the top arm to give you that little bit more room.

You'll probably find in a lot of cases that the trumpet and cone are one by now and you wont separate them..so you might be up for a pair of new cones too..which isn't such a bad thing. Unless the kit comes with new cones?

Without the compressor tool you can take the top arm off to get it out... But it is ALOT easier to buy the tool and get them out. That providing the thread in the rubbers are still good

you don't need the tool to put them back in cos you've got the hilo kit....

either get Ballistic or someone to come around and do it, or smash the trumpets...

you can make a spring compressor pretty easily too - just a bit of allthread and some nuts

This can be dangerous if you don't watch how you do it, there are TONS of pressure on the thread when tightened.
1. Use high tensile allthread (1/2" UNF for Oz cars) not the cheap stuff .
2. Use Hi tensile nuts.
3. Spread the load out on the top of crossmember (to the boltholes) or you will collapse it into the hole. There is no reinforcing around that centre hole.

I dont think that's possible from the kits I've used here..if you wind the hi-lo's right down the thread sticks out the top and into the rubber cones preventing it from seating properly.
