Hi, I have installed a reconditioned old smiths tacho and it works well. Only wire left is the back light wire (red). The tacho is earthed. Just wondering if I should connect it to the lighting wire at the back of the speedo or elsewhere. Will it dim the speedo lights if it is connected there? I have done an extensive search already on ausmini for this topic and didn't come up with a specific answer to my question. Thanks.

No, not at all. It will not have an effect on the brightness of the other lights.

It would dim them however if the wiring was dodgy in one spot or another, but the current draw here is very low.

Just make sure you properly insulate the join with heatshrink or use a proper connector. Electrical tape around bare copper always unravels in a little while.

Yes, hook it to the light wire on the back of the speedo or hook it up to the dash light dimmer switch.

Thanks for that. No dimmer switch on my '69 although there is an on/off switch for the binnacle lights but I will go straight to the back of the speedo. Cheers.
