A standard 1098 has a 12G202 head. This is also the head fitted to most 997 Coopers and mk2 Sprites. It has square intake ports and 1.156" inlet valves.
a 12G295 head was fitted to 998 Cooper, Mk2A Sprite and MG1100 (UK). It has bigger square ports, 1.219" inlet valves, and a much better chamber shape. It's the best smallbore head BMC made, but chambers are too big (giving a low C/R) unless running flat top pistons.
A 202 head can be modified to perform just as well or better than a 295 one. See Russell Engineering in Sydney.
To see which head you have, remove rocker cover and look for numbers CAST on top of head, under the rocker gear.
