I like the way that Neptune contains "Toluol" and Shell contains "Methyl Benzine"
Could there be a coincidence in this?

They are the same thing...
So why did they use two different names? To create the illusion that they were two different companies?
You can imagine the dilemma, will I use Neptune or Shell? Which is better? I know, I will use Amoco with Alcohol.

I'm aware that Neptune was owned by Shell and you are probably right.
Back then BP used `benzol' to achieve the same result, I bet it's the same stuff too.
`market differentiation'...

Funny how in the 60s you would pay extra for Methyl Benzine and in the 90s you would pay less for it.

My wifes Telstar smells like Methyl Benzine when we use Shell but smells Ok when we use Caltex.

I don't think they had control fuels for racing back then.
If you owned a Cooper S for road use or track, you always tipped a couple of gallons of methyl benzine/toluene in there so it didn't ping.
Super was only 97 octane, or less.

If you were caught tipping Methyl Benzine in to your tank at the track you were breaking the rules.
If you bought Shell or Neptune you were not breaking the rules as it already had Methyl Benzine in it.

My final observation for what it's worth - didn't want to mess with the tuning until I had eliminated the fuel theory, so out today for a run still with SAFF 98 in the tanks, much cooler weather, but putting the car under similar loads - no pinging and fautless performance. :?
Ran the tanks almost dry, filled up with Ultimate, and all good still.
So, it would seem that the warmer weather (as far as I can see the only real variable when running on SAFF over the last couple of weeks) has an effect on the car's behaviour when running on the E10 stuff. My theory is the fuel tends to vaporise more (confirmed by the man from SAFF) and this naturally occurs in warmer weather, so it leans off and causes the pinging.
What do you think - agree with my theory?
Peter :)

Heat is a factor and so is altitude.

Try the ultimate at high temps and see if it still pings.

Yep, that's the plan. Just waiting for another warm spell.
